i'm in the same sitation! recently rented the 24-105L. excellent day lens! damn sold and bokeh is nice. however, without my 580EX, it lacks in lowlight dinner pics. perhaps the 17-55 will be a better option if you're not an ass for build quality, full frame capability in future.

by the way, i was invited to some D&D last week and used my kit lens with 580EX. however, I'm still pretty disappointed with a lot of shots. Even PnS probably better. I wonder is it me or is it the lens? wonder if 2.8 helps under such conditions

is it true the 24-70 and 24-105 is priced similar?

this is a good statement "Photoshop cannot turn a picture taken at f4 into f2.8. But photoshop can easily crop a picture taken at 70mm into 105mm with little virtual loss in picture quality"

this is almost a similar thought to mine. but Yoke, how do u access the possibility of more dust from 17-55 compared to the L? does it not matter to you? cos i may be harping over an insignificant issue.
