How to convince wife?

TS, how old are you? Lets say 20++.
For the past 20++ years, you live without a DSLR, any difficulty in life?
Why let the DSLR bother your current/future life?
Just talk to your wife, if she agree, happy ending, else, back to your normal life as before.
You won't die without a DSLR.
Further more, you have limited knowledge about the basic photography,
so, google around or buy some books to understand the fundamental of photography,
Let your wife know you are serious about it and not just want something that you don't even know how to operate.

I'd probably get a used entry level DSLR and fiddle with it for awhile. It would also give me a good sense whether I'd like to pursue this as a hobby, and if it makes sense to lug this around.

I find this thread ammusing, although I am 5 days late in replying this, I can still give my humble advice.
I assume that TS have a very good relationship with his wife since he ask "permission" from her, and I assume TS already researched about DSLR VS. PNS, and D7000 vs all other cameras/brand
I have similar situation like you, like most men do they RESPECT their wife by asking permissions whenever he wants to buy or do anything.
Most woman are soft hearted, you should know by now what are her characteristics and traits, and how she responds to your "NEEDS" and "WANTS"
Start by asking her straight forward that you want d7k, see what are her reactions, by now I assume that you already asked BUT MET WITH SLIGHT RESISTANCE. But its normal for that kind of amount (if you are not that guy booked a space flight)
A very effective way is to "act like a child" by means of SHOWING your affections, showing fondness to her, caresing her, making cute faces, making her laugh, talking to her always, AND OF COURSE don't forget to mention that you want d7k in a very mild manner and not so conspicous like "send a message" signal to her that you want D7K.
you will get your d7k in less than a month and I assure you, its painless, hassle free, and clear conscience..... this is better than "buy 1st lor she can't do anything"

I've somewhat convinced my wife over the last few weeks, because she's seen me reading and researching on DSLRs, and I always went to check out cams when we're out shopping.
I also told her let's go get her something nice for Christmas. She can choose whatever she wants. And I also hinted that I'd get myself something for Christmas...
This whole thing did not happen over night, or over a single conversation. It's over several weeks. ...
So, finally she said I can go buy myself the cam! GREAT!
Now, I'm thinking between the D5100 and D90.
The built-in motor is great, but being a really novice photographer, the D5100 may help me a great deal with it's better colour depth, lower noise at higher ISOs, in-camera HDR, higher resolution, and so on, including HD movies with auto-focus. I know many has mentioned about the movie function, that if I wanted movie, I could go get myself a video-cam. But a video-cam can't take photos! duh!
Of course, this would mean that I can only use AF-S lenses. However, I think for now, the D5100 may suit my needs best.
Hmm... unless someone can convince me otherwise... ha!! ;p

Good news!! A new toy coming ur way
Well... If u think D5100 suit u the best than go ahead and get.. U dun need anyone of us to convince u to get other model. Other model such as d90,d7000,d300s is definitely a better camera compare to d5100 but if u dun need the function it doesn't make sense to buy it too unless u intend to goes into photographic than u might consider 1 time investment on a better camera that can last u for awhile rather than getting a d5100. At least u dun have to try to sell ur d5100 body than convince ur wife again for upgrading ur camera.

if you can afford, the D7000 should be a safer bet with 1 more command dial...

Well ... since the wife says it's ok, have you considered a second hand D7000? I think there are quite a few going at the marketplace and they should be within your budget (if you're looking at a new D90 that would have set you back at least $1300 - $1400 anyways).
So saying, regardless of which camera you buy for yourself, don't forget to give something back to your wife and best of all, enjoy your Christmas gift to the max.

Yes, you're right. I'm now considering the D7000, cos it would definitely last me a much longer time compared to the D5100.
And yes, we're out shopping for her stuff now.
