oh yes...bring less metal. The metal detector very sensitive...even the metal on my hiking shoes was detected last time, had to take off and on again.

and from experience...those at the monitoring station have camera knowledge and presumably have the right to ask visitors to remove the gaffer if there is suspicion it is 500mm and beyond.

I was driving near PLAB, and I saw 3 Apaches doing the bow and then got 4 F-15 zooming past. Think they are practicing for aerial display at the Open House.

It depends on the environmental conditions and how high up they are.

Helicopters are easier as they sometimes do not move but for the jets usually 1/4000 on a bright day can freeze them. If subject still too dark/bright, can also use the EV -/+ to adjust.

I have done the previous Open House and a few Airshow too.

My recommendation is 1/1500s shutter speed and autoISO. It is not so much the shutter speed, but to be able to capture a flying fighter jet. It is the ability to pan and keep the bird within your viewfinder!!! You got to be quick hands and quick legs and some good skills with your long lens.

In all the similar shoots I have done, I go up to a max of 300mm with a DX camera (450mm equivalent). That is about the max focal length I can handle and able to capture the fast moving fighter jet.

For the choppers and those Charlie130 or other slow flying birds, can just set to P mode.

You can choose to bring although will be difficult to find space to deploy at optimum locations with all the people crowding around. Monopod would be a good idea for this event.

so far the organisers never state cannot bring tripod in.

really can't understand what is the security issue have to do with the lenes 500mm and beyond? due to their sizes? by viewing through the lens we all know it's definitely a lens what other thing can it be?
there is ways of going beyond 500mm,but it just create inconvenience to all photograher
i dont own any 500mm lens. but do hope the organizer remove that restriction which obsolete in this model digital world and give all photographer a freedom to shoot their favorite aerial display once a year during the open house.

It is a privilege to bring in camera and 500mm lens, not an entitlement.

Try not to create a hassle by trying to smuggle in tele-extender and lens combination which will go beyond 500mm.

My colleague happens to be stationed at the security point and is an experienced photographer himself.

Can say but people will still do because they believe they are that lucky or they simply act blur.

If your friend is in a position to make recommendations, would be a good idea to have the restrictions very very visible at the shuttle bus pickup points, entrance and various places.

Hyperfocal, f/8, ISO 800, MF. Easiest setup for primes or zooms which don't need refocusing every focal length change.

So there's a chance, if I bring a crop body + a 400mm lens, the security guy won't allow me in and possibly detain me?
