7D preview mode noisy while scrolling up and down from LCD.

It's perfectly normal. I have it on both my 500D and 7D. The noise appears because the camera loads a much lower quality version of the image to speed up scrolling. Once it stops, the fully processed image is loaded and the noise disappears.

    580exII or 430exII

If you don't need your flash to be a wireless commander, the 430EXII will be sufficient. It's powerful enough for most situations and personally, I find its size and weight balances very well with both smaller (500D) and larger (7D) bodies. The extra power of the 580EXII will come in handy if...

Canon offers locking mode dial for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D

Even if Canon does it for free, it's a no-no for me. I've never ever had an accidental mode change on my 7D. In fact, the locking mode dial was the most irritating feature of all when I tried out the 60D, it gets in the way and slow things down-definitely something you don't want when you have...

    canon neck strap

Most camera shops should have it. Cathay is the distributor for OpTech so will definitely have it. I've seen them at Orient but choice is limited. To Raydio: The Pro Strap and Pro-Loop Strap are good choices-seen several people using them. I personally use the Utility Strap as I feel the...

Help! Yellowish spots in 7D viewfinder

I think the slight yellow tint is because of the transmissive LCD layer behind the focusing screen. Mine is very slightly yellow too, but then so are other 7Ds and also the viewfinders of many Nikons I've tried which also feature LCD overlays in the VF (D5000, D90, D300s). Nothing to worry about...

Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

I too, upgraded from the 500D. My options during the time were the 7D, 50D and 5D mkII. I tested all 3 extensively at Canon Vivo and finally settled for the 7D because: 1. Large viewfinder, admittedly smaller than the 5D2 but largest among APS-C. Also the ability to turn grid lines and unused...

    550D AF speed vs 7D

The 7D is an action shooter's camera, and is optimized for that. Unless you intend to go into serious action photography or you just prefer a fast, snappy camera, your 550D will suit you just fine. Is the 550D limiting you in any way right now? I'll admit, I upgraded from my 500D to the 7D...

    canon neck strap

+1 for the OpTech. I got tired of my neck screaming at me after using the Canon strap with my 7D+lens+430EXII, not to mention the strap shouting "CANON 7D USER". I switched to the OpTech Utility strap and love it.

Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

This is one of the killer functions my 500D doesn/t have, and makes me appreciate the 7D even more. I shoot at Universal Studios quite often and this is how I set mine: C1 is set for AE bracketing +/-2/3 ev with cont drive to catch the mascots. C2 is my 'action mode': Tv 1/1600sec, auto ISO...

Question on exposure meter for 500D

In M mode the exposure indicator tells you whether your current settings will give you an under/proper/over exposed picture. In P/Tv/Av, the indicator is used to set how dark or bright you want the picture to be (by moving it left or right), the camera will then choose settings to achieve the...

Official Canon 550D User Thread Part III

Use the exposure indicator in the viewfinder when adjusting aperture or shutter value. A centered indicator means proper exposure. In general, use of the P/Av/Tv modes together with exposure compensation is enough for nearly all shooting situations-saves you the trouble of fiddling in manual...
