Official Canon EOS 7D User Thread Part I

new user of 7d here... got the cam and paired with the 17-55mm 2.8... i gg to the US soon and i'm thinking of lugging a zoom lens... anyone can recommend one for the 7D? and anyway does Canon lenses covers international warranty? maybe i should get a lens there?

Since USD is weak, maybe you can get from there cheaper but I have read here that Canon lenses don't have international warranty anymore. Go for the mother of zoom lens if you can afford it. the 70-200 F2.8 II IS USM L. Or the F4L version if you just shoot mainly outdoor.

Hi VickyFaith,

I've tried on my 7d , the half press shutter button doesn't perform the AE Lock for spot metering .

But when i press '*' back button , it perform AE Lock even on spot metering mode .

I have a question on Exposure Lock.

In Aperture Priority mode, using Matrix Metering, I can lock the Exposure value by half-pressing the shutter button.

But in spot metering or other non-Matrix metering mode, half-pressing the shutter button does not lock the exposure value.

Wish to check whether this is your experience too. Canon SG advised me to go down for them to check, as they believe that the Exposure value should be locked.

would like to know what the 7D users have for their lenses.... i've the 17-55mm and looking for a good zoom lens... what do the 7D users here uses to cover the higher range?

higher range iam using the 70-200mm MK II..
this is a good lens definitely..

I use a 70-200 f4L IS for most purposes, but rent a f2.8 MKII for applications that demand it.

One day, I'll own one. :)

Last I heard was $2100 from TCW. :bsmilie: ;)

......... the battery door can be tucked away in the grip without worrying of misplaced..........

LOL i did not know that there's such a feature...lol.... thanks for sharing.

thanks.. i think i'm going to get the 70-200 F4L IS..... seems like a popular lens

Not only is it a popular lens, but it is also one of the best lenses that Canon has ever made!

I have the 70-300 L. You may want to do some research to compare this with the 70-200 f/4. There are pros and cons but I decided that the pros outweighed the cons. Great lens. I have the 17-55 mm also but this telephoto zoom is now my primary walkabout lens.

mind to share what are your pros for the 70-300L over the 70-200 F4 L?

I must admit I have not use the 70-200 mm F/4 except when I tried it in the shop. I don't think there is any image quality difference between the 2 and both have equal IS performace. This is from the reviews I read.

I find that I always like to fill my frame with the subject so I tend to use max zoom. Before I got the 70-300mm, I bought a 2nd hand 55-250mm to see what focal length I would use and I found it is almost always in the far end (250mm). I set the lens at 200mm and I always feel like to'pulling-in' more. I tried to fin negative review of the 70-300mm but found very few - focus/zoom rings design, variable aperture both which I found I can live with. And what seals it was the the price diff between the 2 is less than $100.

What I like about the 70-300mm? The image is sharp, very sharp even with the aperture fully open. Focusing is very fast.

Anyone tried the firmware upgrade 1.2.5 on 7D yet ?

http://www.canonrumors.com/2011/04/firmware-1-2-5-for-eos-7d/

http://www.canonrumors.com/files/eos7d125.zip

Firmware Version 1.2.5 incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were rare cases where movie files taken could not be opened when repeatedly shooting movies with specific CF cards.
2. Fixed a rare phenomenon in which there were cases where “Err 02″ appeared when repeatedly shooting still images with specific CF cards.
3. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when using high-capacity (32 GB or greater) CF cards: If either a CF card with only a little available space remaining or the battery was removed and then reinserted into the camera, and then the user attempted to start shooting movies immediately, shooting would stop.
4. Improved the writing/reading speeds when using UDMA 7-compatible CF cards.
5. Fixed a phenomenon that occurred when custom function C.Fn 4-1 was set to assign IS start to the AF stop button on the lens: When used with lenses that do not have an AF stop button, the IS function would not work.
6. Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)

I just encountered issue no. 2. This upgrade seems not available in canon official site. If there is issue after upgrade, will it break the warranty from canon?

Btw, anybody notice the cf card capacity is not fully available? I mean my cf card is 8 gb but seems like only 5th something is available. Strange.... When I check the firmware version, it said that the cf card contain the current version which is 1.2.3... Suspect they stored the firmware image in the cf card also. Anybody knows?

Hi kennygo,

Last night, I've upgraded the firmware to 1.2.5, no issue so far and run well.

To make life easier, i just stored the firmware.bin into the root folder at cf card and install thru the camera (no usb required). Maybe you can check firmware file with older version inside your cf card in the root folder, you can delete it.

Hi biskandar,

Thanks. I will try to install it tomorrow. The root folder is it only can be seen using computer? Is it a hidden file? I don't seems to be able to see it using camera and computer.

I've heard on other forums that firmware 1.2.5 is not an official release from Canon. In fact, some are expecting version 1.2.6 to come out soon. Is this true?

Hi Raydio, not possible. I just received my cam from Canon, and they have upgraded to 1.2.5 for me.
