I think, like what many have said, the internet is just another channel of interaction, be it on a social or economic level. It's just like a brick and mortar store with it's physical interaction, the internet just gives it another avenue.
It also helps level the playing field for many less outgoing types so maybe some ladies and men find it less intimidating to talk to someone online before meeting up.
So I guess it's all about preferences. Some prefer the initial face to face interaction, while others prefer the comfort of being able to say what they like online without fear of stumbling over their words.
