Which lens would you recommend? Nikon AFS 300mm f2.8 VRII or 400mm f2.8 VR?

I will be going to HK next week and would probably be doing some lens shopping.

Been thinking about which lens should I get? 400mm or 300mm? I shoot track n field events, bowling, volleyball and basketball.

Like to hear your opinions please! :D

It would really depend on the focal length that you need, the size difference of the 300 and 400 is huge.

This is a question that is so much based on personal preferences. First you might need to ask yourself or if you know how close you can get with either lens and which 1 can make your job easier. :bsmilie:

IMO, too close for bowling/volleyball and basketball (70-200 would be perfect). 300/400 better for Track n Field if you're shooting from away on the spectator stand, but you'll be limited to distances far away - anything too close, you'll be forced to frame very tightly.

Btw both 300/400 is going to be heavy for hand-holding, monopod is recommended.

Alternatively, you can add a TC 2.0 III to your 70-200VR. Hand-holding is possible, even for a long period - depends on your arm strength.

I always thought those users looking at the big tele lenses should KNOW what they really need ? anyways is your 70-200 the VR2 lens ? :s

Also what about the 200 f2 with a 1.7x or 2x TC on it ?? you have so much high ISO avail on you Camera after all.... ;)

Thanks guys for all you comments! appreciate! :D

Wow, carrying a 300 or 400mm back?

if i am not mistaken, 300 comes in the large soft carrying bag but the 400mm comes in a trunk case.

Price too...

Ever consider a 300 F4 which is much lighter & cheaper ?

It would not be fast enough in indoors games such as Basketball, Volleyball and even outdoor when cloudy. If TS asked, money is no issue at all.

For me, money is the problem. If not, I'll getting 70-200 & 85f1.4. :'( and definitely in HK 2...

I had a 300/2.8 . It was too heavy and sold it for a 300/4 .

The prices in HK for both lenses are so much more attractive than Singapore.
300mm f2.8 VRII is HKD41,500 or S$6,640
400mm f2.8 VR is HKD71,500 or S$11,440

300mm f2.8 VRII is selling at $8K in Singapore and 400mm f2.8 VR is over $14K based on my last enquiry.

Ever consider a 200-400/f4 vr2?
It'll give you good flexibility in terms of framing for.those above mentioned sports.
I recently purchase one in HK wingshing in mongkok.
Singapore TKphoto quote me $9.7k

I don't really like f4 lens! :D

Then 300 2.8, 400 will be too long for some sports, like bowling. 70-200 2.8 would be more versatile.

i recommend the 200/2.0.

with a 1.4x = 280 f/2.8

with a 1.7x = 340/3.5

with a 2x = 400/4.0

image quality loss is minimal on FF - D3, D3S, D4.

that's my two cents worth. hence i skipped out on buying the 300 and opted for the 500/4 instead - sometimes, weight counts for more in the long run, esp since you can use a slightly higher ISO these days. :)

Just want to add that the 300mm F2.8 is hand-holdable for short durations but not the 400mm F2.8. You will need to use a monopod/tripod with the latter unless you have a very strong arm. :bsmilie:

The new canon 400 f2.8 IS II is very much lighter than the nikon 400mm. :)
