Which lens would you recommend? Nikon AFS 300mm f2.8 VRII or 400mm f2.8 VR?

The new canon 400 f2.8 IS II is very much lighter than the nikon 400mm. :)

Thanks for sharing the info but I am unlikely moving to Canon just because their lens are lighter! ;)

It is difficult to recommend you, as you shoot indoor and out door games.
Some indoor games such as Bowling, 300 will be over kill while outdoor track & field will not be long enough. Unless you are able to buy both.
It depends on what you shoot most to decide.
I have a 300f4 cus I couldn't afford a 2.8. So only shoot on good weather. ..no choice.

Thanks Keykid, getting both was one of my consideration too! :D

Ha ha, i wasn't trying to get you to change brands. Sorry I gave that impression. Now that Nikon bodies are significantly excellent at top, mid and entry levels there is no point to do so. It is just for comparison sake.

no worries Andrew! :D
I am currently incline towards the 300mm f2.8 with 1.4x for now until one day it can no longer meet my needs I will go for 400mm then! :D

yup Canon 400 much lighter but very pricy! Best buy is the Canon 300 f2.8 less than 8k .undersold in Spore compared to B&H. Orient Photo has a used mint 300f4 .. Best buy is Nikon 200- 400 zoom bout 8k used . Used it handheld but not for long ! other alternative is Sigma 120-300 f2.8 luv this but Nikon colour better . The 400mm f2.8 Nice but seldom used and very heavy and pricy except new canon

Good lens to buy is the Conurus modified Zeiss 400mm Only for Canon. Its undesold today and one cannot lose much esp compsred to ne Canons and also for Cine . A new Zeiss Zoo ultra lite is almost US90K ! Crazy ? waiting list . Zeiss is Zeiss and comparable to Leica. Price of New Leica C ? Scary

Am using now a Nikon V1 with 200-400. Fantastically light and very goo reach with convertors! Try it . Save the $$$ from the 400mm

The AF-S 300 f/2.8 would be a good option even for track and field. When needed, you can stack up to a 1.7X TC. This goes true for the AF-S 400 f/2.8 too. The f/2.8 makes it ideal for low light shooting, even at night.

The 2X TC would be a bit pushing for low light.

I would get the 300 f/2.8 for flexibility.

@ TS:

Which shop(s) did you get the price and their availability status from?

I tried to get hold of 3 stores but Wingshing did not reply my enquiry.

I actually got my colleague in Hong Kong help me source. I believe it is a shop called DC Fever at Windsor House

Oh my goodness, Nikon 300mm f2.8 VRII is only HKD39,900 or SGD6,384 and Nikon 400mm f2.8 VR is HKD68,800 or SGD11,008.

How to resist?
