What do you bring (photographic equipment) for travel

1 week to Bangkok

600D
18-135mm + UV filter
50mm + UV Filter
16Gb SD
8Gb SD
2 Battries
2 lens pen
1 blower

GF1 2 bodies
8 batteries
32Gb SD 12pcs
EVF
Leather Beanbag (with polyfoam insert )
Made in China Tripod with ballhead, but damned light
650nm, 720nm, and 900nm IR screw on

9-18mm Oly
14mm Panny
45mm Panny
45-150mm Oly
180mm f2.8 Nikon with 2xTele

Zero (means none) Laptop
7" Android with 32Gb micro sd for Internet and watching movies

All of this (except for the tripod) is stuffed into a leather bag which I stitched myself, with sheep leather-skin which I bought from Bangkok.
The cost of the entire sheep-skin was a mere SG$13. This bag has lasted me for more than 4 years already.
I stitched it roughly according to this design:
Redefining Style

And waterproofing it with "black-out" curtain cloth, at 5meters for SG$3 total.
All the additional zips and velcros and straps cost less than SG$5.
(I managed to find 50meters of 1 inch black webbing for SG$1.20 for the entire roll)

My tripod sits in a deliberately dirty and old looking drawstring green canvas bag, which cost something like SG$2 for everything.
My sewing machine (Japanese-made "Brother") was bought from Carrefour at SG$78 on sale (also about 4 years ago).
And I have since made more than 15 bags/ pouches/ and made many other repairs, and modifications.

If I were to buy a "Camera Bag", I'll consider using an "Angry Birds" commercially available kid's bag, sold in Bangkok for something like SG$4 or 5 tops. Yes, I also stitched my own padded inserts-bag at the whopping total cost of SG$2.

At least, I'll be damned sure that no one will "eye" my flashy Angry-Birds bag.

Cheers

MP w/ 35, 75
XPan w/ 45
GX100
Gorillapod
Benro Travelangel
Into an insert in my non-camera-backpack

Took this to Japan last year, will use the same setup for my trip this year.

Easier than the trip the previous year where I brought the 1V with TSE24, 35 1.4, 85 1.2.

Then I can relax and enjoy the trip :)

Michael - I like your bag choices! Most wonderful.
No need to spend heaps of camera-bags, simple bags, and angry birds bag, very cool!

Lol nice angry birds bag:bsmilie:

I'm primarily a prime user so hard choices need to be made everytime i travel... some examples of setups I have taken with me.

1DsII
17-40L
50 f1.2L
85 f1.2L
580EX II

Weakness of this setup is the f4 lens. If I had the cash in those days i would go for the 16-35L II.

D700
20 f2.8D
35 f2.0D
50 f1.4G
85 f1.4D

Weakness is the lack of wide-angle zoom. But this is the lightest setup and you can stack your primes (20, 35 & 50 are small!) in your bag.

D700
17-35 f2.8D
50 f1.4G
85 f1.4D

Not much weakness. Except that 17-35 is not very sharp in the corners.

D700
14-24 f2.8G
35 f1.4G
50 f1.4G
85 f1.4G
60 f2.8G Micro

Weakness is the lack of an accompanying telephoto. Micro lens good if you do alot of travel food photography, I realized I don't need that.

D700
14-24 f2.8G
35 f1.4G
85 f1.4G
180 f2.8D

The most effective setup I have used. But weakness is you cannot mount filters of the 14-24G, and I did miss a good shot due to this reason.

D700
14-24 f2.8G
24 f1.4G
50 f1.4G
85 f1.4G
180 f2.8D

Good setup, but you will miss the 35mm. Weakness is the overlap between 14-24 and confusion on which lens to use.

I'm currently using a retrospective 30 with an additional lens pouch so the last 2 combos I have used in combination with all my clothes, batteries & travel items for 3-4 days stuffed inside. This bag is not to be messed with. 1 bag travelling can save alot of trouble and weight especially if you are taking the bus or doing city-hopping.

My current thoughts are that you do not need a 50mm when you have a 35mm during travel. However when I shoot weddings there is a completely different mindset since 50mm can be very useful as a compromise between 35mm & 85mm.

However there is a dilemma between 24mm & 35mm, both are very useful and completely different. Having an f1.4 and ability to mount filters is also very useful compared to the 14-24 f2.8 (indispensible since you will always need a UWA).

It really boils down to what kind of trip is this ? Pure holiday with family, photo trip holiday, serious die hard specific go to there to do this photo trip. Let's leave I pay you to go there to do this trips.

The more gear you take for a lower photo level trip the less enjoyable it is going to be plus if there is wife around there is the unhappiness factor to deal with. Never felt that a trip is so important as once in a life time - you can always go again it is only a photo op.

for me :

D700 , 85 f1.8 and 28-300 f3.5-5.6 , carbon sirui tripod , some filters ,extra battery , extra CF
thats all

For me would be mainly my D70s, 17-55mm, CPL, SB600, extra batteries and memory cards.
Not forgetting my sony tx-5. Seldom bring my tripod anymore.
;)

D7000 + Grip
Tamron 18-270mm
Tokina 11-16mm
Nikon 50mm f1.8
samsung digi cam
remote control
tripod

all these items in a kata bag when in hk for 5 days

Canon 60D
15-85mm f/3.5-5.6
70-200mm f/4L IS
72mm CPL and step-up ring for the 70-200
More than 32GB of SD cards
Battery charger and socket adaptor
No tripod
No flash

Going with a lightweight setup as I will be walking long distances at high altitude. (Jiuzhaigou and Huanglong in China) I suspect even extra 1kg of CF tripod is going to matter a lot under those conditions. Similarly, I'll bring ample memory cards as I won't be lugging around my laptop.

Agreed. But I think the consequences are worse if you bring back beautiful pictures from a photo trip and the wife questions you on why you didn't bring her along...

LOL, there is no win-win eh?
Anyway I am contemplating to get a Tamron 18-270mm PZD just to keep my gear to the MINIMUM (ie just 1 lens), versus bringing Tamron 17-50 + Tamron 70-300 heavy lens.
Anyone thinks that is a good idea?

went to hongkong and macau last weekend.
i just brought these with me.
1. d7k
2. sb700
3. tokina 11-16
4. 35mm 1.8g
5. wireless remote
6. tripod

Going kunming, lijiang, dali and shangrila in two weeks' time. Will be bringing
60d
10-22
17-55
70-200 L F4 IS
580ex ii
All other small accessories.
All in Tamrac evolution 8
And a sirui tx2204.
Hope it doesn't spoil my trip. Thinking whether shall I buy a sirui t025 or t005 instead.

I realized a lot of people bring a lot of lenses and no spare bodies.
Bring a second body is important especially going a long distance trip.

For Digital
D90 / D60 as backup
