Tips on Macro Photography: How to prevent black background

Hi Guys, I'm venturing to macro photography and would be interested to learn some pointers on correct exposure settings. I tried a week ago with a macro lens and a ring flash but I always end up with a black background. I noticed some shots taken by our fellow CSers were well exposed and the "green" background is very appealing. appreciate any tips that can improve my shooting. thanks!
