A picture of Sigmund, my miniature pinscher. I like this shot because of his expression and the way the eyes look out at you.

Would cropping the space on his left and right make the composition more effective?

yes if u crop to portrait it will look nice. also another consideration is your background. in this case the brown thing is kinda distracting. u may wanna compose with a lighter and complementary color than the subject.
