Prosumer cams for beginners

I'm helping a friend to look out for prosumer cameras as she's begining to have interest in photography but not ready to indulge into DSLR yet. Can anybody recommend me models of prosumer cameras of any brand that I can tell my friend to consider?

I have been seeing all types of DSLR but know nothing about prosumer ones....

i personally like the canon powershot G-series. the latest is the G9.

I am using Panasonic FZ50 now. I would strongly recommend this machine as it got almost all manual control that you would expect from DSLR.
It is just not that good for high ISO performance. The Leica co-developed lens can delivery superb picture. Just my 2 cents...

almost identical as a DSLR but cant change lens . makes transitions much easier

I recommend the FZ50, full manual control ( including Zoom & Focus) + external TTL Flash If I am not wrong, which till today no Prosumer camera offer all these function in a package.
