Poor close-up focusing for Canon A40?

How close was your camera to the flower?

if i didnt remember wrongly..

I un-zoom my lense to 1x, and moved in real close to the subject.. roughly 15~20cm away from it. Used P AE, with the Marco (flower icon) option selected and flash off. Next, half-depress the shoot button, and allow a moment for the camera to refocus the subject and finally depress the button fully.
