How to measure Flash Voltage?

This may sound like a stupid question but better be safe than sorry. I have this 20 year old Kakon TW-3000 flash. Before trying it on my D30, I would like to make sure that it is safe and won't fry my D30. I know some of you have actually measured the voltage of third party made flashes. The question is how do you measure it? Just turn the power of the flash on and use a multimeter? Do you have to fire the flash? Any risk?

Some enlightment please. Thanks in advance.

Just turn on and use the multimeter. No need to fire the flash (when you fire the voltage drops to zero momentarily)....

Thanks Mpenza. The voltage I measured is about 1.5V. Is it normal?
