How to create gradient effect on photo?

Noob here. Have been reading the posts, and like them because I learned a lot from this forum. Now, I am wondering how do take pictures with gradient effect? It is like a photo can have a light tone on the top corner than eventually turns darker to the bottom end. Thanks.

A simple way to achieve this effect is to use filters.

Add adjustment layer with gradient for levels. If this is what you are refering to.
