I also have the same set-up as you except my flash is FL-36 and I have a 70-300mm lens.

Maybe you can try the 14-54mm F2.8-3.5 lens or the 12-60 F2.8-4.0 SWD lens?
I think both are quite a good lens to replace the 14-42mm lens.
