I use 55-250mm IS for these, #3 100% crop without PP.

Hi Guys,

For those who are interested to get this lense, I just got it today at MS color for S$365(Cash). I just told them I forgot to bring the e-quote but remembered the price was S$365 and they sold it to me at this price. :)

I'm sorry... could I know what your setup is? Apart from the 55-250mm lens? Extender? Tripod? Tried to take the moon tonight, and it was really small!

Lucky of you. Price of this lens had actually went up a lot.

I got it at $353 about 1 month ago. :)

Actually I was trying my luck cos I dont really have the e-quote. I saw one of the post that says a bro here got his lense at S$365 2 days ago, so I just told them I got the equote at that price but I didnt bring it and it works :p

This is off topic, suggest you start a new thread or search the forums. However, a quick answer to your question can be found here : http://www.mikeoates.org/mas/observe/lunar-p/. Basically, for every 100mm of 35mm equivalent focal length, the moon fills about 2.5% of the width of the sensor. Even at 250mm (equivalent to 400mm on a full frame) the moon is not going to take up a significant portion of the frame.

Note that eltire said 100% crop for the last photo. That is not the entire frame.

This is a cheap and good lens, furthermore it's easy to carry around and doesn't takes up much weight.

You will definitely need a tripod, and a teleconverter cannot be used on the EF-S 55-250, unless you use a third party TC and can do without AF.

Your PP cropping can substitute the teleconverter ^^. Most people crop when shooting the moon anyway, even with the 100-400L.
Here's my humble effort with the 55-250IS. I don't like getting too close to the moon btw.

This was taken on a tripod, but my dad has managed to handhold at 1/8 with IS, leaning against a parapet. IS = not a magic pill, but it really does do A LOT.
I feel like upgrading to the 70-200f/4L sometimes (for the superior corner sharpness and contrast), but I know I will miss the IS.

From your larger version pic, it's obvious that the picture is blurred, and most probably due to camera shake....if on tripod, maybe you should switch off IS to prevent interference.

The sigma lens got a MACRO attached to the lens name, doesn't mean they can really do 1.0 magnification. The Sigma 70-200 Macro can only do around 0.29, and this 70-300 can only do 0.50 magnification.

The canon EFS 55-250 doesn't have a MACRO word in its name, but it as well can do 0.31magnification, even better than the Sigma 70-200.

Don't be fooled just by the MACRO wording, and don't under estimate the power of IS!

think a faster shutter speed off IS will do the trick... and for me i use ISO100 to avoid noise.

aperture at F13 shutter at 1/60 with tripod 100% crop, off IS, ISO100.:)

will the price of this 55-250mm is drop back again?i m plannig to buy a 50D yet not now...if i buy the lens now,no point wat..

I'm not sure, but I think if there's any chance in a drop happening, it'll only be in a couple of months at least.

I have not come across any 55-250mm made in Japan. I believe there was an earlier thread, and everyone said theirs is made in Malaysia.

Ah, found it.

And no, no quality issues that I know of thus far. The photographs are proof that this lens is made well and designed well. It is capable of beautiful results. :)
