wow nice shot of the cat. i feel kinda hypnotised just by looking at the sharp eyes.

Thanks! I personally love the catchlights very much. :) This photo wasn't possible without IS.

Exposure: 0.167 sec (1/6)
Aperture: f/5
Focal Length: 109 mm
ISO Speed: 1600

I was rather delighted at the details preserved at ISO1600 on my 400D as well...

Think th eprice now is 4++ the last i checked (after the price increase).

IS = very important okay, cannot discount its usefulness. :) No need for monopod anymore...
though IS may seem important for beginners i think it's better to improve shooting technique rather than depend on IS - breathing technique ect

IS does not replace the monopod/tripod in some instances - eg low light where u need slow shutter speeds

Hi,
I'm using this lens for birding photography (just started)... just enough reach in a Canon 450D. If you get it right, it can produce quite nice image. Below are some bird images I took (hand held shot) using this lens... 100% crop:

1) Red-Breasted Parakeet

2) Peaceful Dove

3) Collared Kingfisher

Anyway, very happy with this lens... it's light both in weight and my wallet and also can produce quite nice image.

Have a nice day.

WOW birding with this lens, niceee. I have issues with slow focusing with this lens ^^

Of course, how could we forget the ABCs of steady shooting! BUT I have to say I've completely ditched my monopod with the 55-250IS. Anything 1/4sec and above is manageable.

I am currently using tamron 17-50... would the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, compliment my current lens?

Of course! In terms of focal length, you're getting 17-250 with two lenses :)

That is the same set-up I have right now...of course both lens are a match, they don't overlap and both are at decent prices :)

Of course with the price increase, you may want to checkout the B&S section to see if anyone letting go at a nice price.

Another lens you might want to consider which is ard the 300+ range is the Sigma 70-300 DG APO which i've been using only for 2 weeks. I was oso tied down by budget and had narrowed down to btwn the 55-250mm and the SIGMA. When i laid eyes on the Sigma i fell in love with it's build and feel. After testing the lens i was completely bowled over and didn't even test the 55-250!!! Just another option for you lah...sample pics from my last shoot. All shots handheld mostly at F5.6 1/500/800 ISO 200

However i belive the IS on the 55-250 will come in handy in situations like this bike event cos the action was abit fast and i had quite a no. of bad shots especially at 300mm end due to cam shake. Front end of lens will turn while focusing. It does produce very warm colors and i take alot of my daughter's pics using this lens in my bedroom with ex flash bounced and pics were of pretty good IQ too!

How much is the second hand market now for this lens? I think some store who have pre price increase stocks can still ell you at lower price since the increase is not as bad as the EF lenses. I put mine on BnS and can't even get 300 before that I rather just keep it.

i jus got a price from AP $350 w/o GST...still thinking which to get...canon 55-250mm IS or the sigma 70-300mmDG.. canon wan have IS, sigma wan have macro...please give some advise...
