Well as you guys much more experince in Nikon, can you please give me list where is Nikon D70s has advantages over 20D and probably vice versa.

Cheers

Most importantly, which one the photographer is comfortable with. The quality of the shots depend on the person behind the viewfinder. I'm a D70 user. Yeah.....

Actually, rather than finding advantages of D70 over 20D, what you can do is round up all your friends and see what brand of dslr most of them use... then i think it would be easier to make your decision... the advantage of buying the same brand dslr as what your friends own is that you can swap lenses or you can borrow lens from your friends to test the quality before making a purchase decision. I use D70 but I find the large dial on canon 20D real cool.... :) IMO both camera can produce nice pictures.

I found KenRockwell is pretty good but really not for me, his opinion sometime is very bias, and especially after read his review for D50, 18-55mm and D70s with 18-70 , not very consistent.

Probably I am trying to justify the higher price of 20D over D70s.

personally I feel that its unfair comparing the 20D to a D70s. I believe 20D is more of a prosumer DSLR which is more of a comparison with the D100 and D200. :) Nevertheless, like idor say, get wat u are comfortable with and try to get the same system as your kakis so u can borrow lenses if needed to.

Cheers!

There's little to compare about. Before deciding on getting a cam, you need to know which is meant for you. Specs don't mean everything.

Nikon D70s is cheaper than Canon 20D, thus it will be apple and orange comparison.

Regards,
Arto.

Yep, no need to compare la.... just go out to shoot. Why dont you post pictures taken by either and let us guess which is which ;p Compare skills, composition, etc etc... no need to compare gears.

get to know more friends from the "dark" side and "white" side, play with their cameras, and u will clearly know which system is best for you. take note, u are choosing a system and not only a camera. I agree that some reviews out there is very sujective and so read them for references only. D70 is my first DLSR and i did alot of research b4 i plunge into the "bottomless" hole. hahaha... meanwhile, i enjoy every moment of photography.;)

I'm no Nikon user (maybe in the future?) but just a question...

"In what ways is the 20D 'far-far more superior' den the D70s?"

Tell him to give u 10... no just 3 good reasons.

Personally with this kind of reasoning simply by the word 'superior' without giving reasons on how it would affect ur pictures & personal bank account, I have my doubts on ur friend's knowledge.

A brand is far superior than the other only if the bells & whistles on the specific brand of camera improves ur pictures and helps u cut cost.

Not talking frm a brand-conscience POV but frm a rationale POV IMHO.

I found it Canon 20D is slightly over my budget.

If he say for eg. Canon 20D magnesium alloy body is "far far more superior" than D70 plastic one, he is just exagerating one point of what makes a camera superior. But then, 20D has better noise at ISO 1000, bigger megapixel, has PC terminal socket, better shutter mechanism, better viewfinder etc... Surely it must be better.... but for a higher price of course.

in terms of specs and all the 20d may be more superior....but look here.... its the photo tt counts at the end of the day... u should get a camera that

1) suits your price range
2) can perform relatively well regarding what u would like to shoot.... so that u can produce the photo that u want
3) lastly this is sth i tell everyone...go for the feel of the cam...if the grip of the camera doesnt suit u....it just doesnt...ahaha

cheers...

You are one giving a better answer to the thread because I do not understand what the rest of the folks here are trying to point out to the thread starter.

People place value on a product according to special features, proven performance as well as the price.

The D70 is cheaper and to me higher flash sync speed (even up to 1/7 50sec) is more important for specialised flash photography. You don't need a rugged camera body for whatever the case. Once you drop the camera on the floor, plastic or better built material suffers the same result from the mishaps.

Depending on how your friend defines superiority, resolution? fps capability? focusing speed?
D70s is more to 350D, while the D200 is to the 20D in terms of competitive line up.
In case you are tempted to cross to Canon, the 20D is soon to be replaced.

dpreview has all the comparo data. also If you shift thru tonnes of pictures in pbase shot thru either D70s or Canon 20D, you will find your answer there.

i 2nd idor's advice

it depends on how well you know your camera to make full use of it.
