Hi Silverelf.

I always wanted to buy some insurance when diving. May i know roughly how much and from which agent? I am refering to those for only one trip only.

Thanks.

Dive insurance, go to DAN.
There is no 1 dive trip insurance kinda of thing here.

There are such things at AUS, but not here.
Anyway, not very expensive like $120 a year.

onz! onz! wait for me to perfect my swim stroke+ buy that darn expensive&elusive wetsuit..then can join u all for dive...wait for me ah...

Hi Coozie. Like your idea, cheapo diver's club. :)

Same applies to photography. Cheapo gear also can take reasonable pictures. Cheapo gear also can dive. :) You don't need jetfin to fin faster, you need a strong pair of legs. :) Ha Ha Ha!!!

Yoz..Dude... :D
Glad to know there are more divers in CS.

Coozie, good idea of having cheapo diver's club.
So, ehe... Want to organize dive trip?

Thinking of planning one in july though, and go for my AOWD cert.
So maybe that date is cool?

Dive site probably, aur?;)

Will be organising one July trip to tioman.
for phototaking and coral life, tioman is much better.

Aur has alot of 'dead sites'. Dunno why ppl still like to go there.
I take u/w photos, so sites must have respectable coral/marine life and not to mention, my fave objects, nudibranches!

hi guys!

i'm not a diver la, but quite interested in getting into it all, after going snorkelling overseas recently. anywayz, juz wanna check out wat kind of courses can you all can recommend me, coz my situation abit different from u all i guess

i'll be going to the states for my studies in a few months time, prob around september, want to pick up a diving course and get certification here, since i quite free from now til september la, but not sure wat would be good... alot of ppl have told me to take PADI and i noe there are some other certifications, so wanna hear ur expert opinions about wat my best option would be

basically, i want to be able to go diving to a decent depth, maybe 50 or 100 m? and must be able to do this in USA, i.e. the cert must be recognised there. i heard the basic PADI cert can only go like 25 m, cannot really see much at that depth, so wondering exactly wat i should be looking to do, wat cert is "enough", etc etc

Thanks!

The reason why people take PADI, is becos they have around 80% of the world recreational diving market, thus it is known throughout the world.

Recreational diving is till the max dept of 40m. Any more that that is non-recreational, meaning you will be doing mixed gases and techincal diving. Like seen in documentaries, those diving with 2 thanks or more.

Beginner certs(called open water) for PADI is till the max depth of 18m. The next cert, adv open water allows you to go 40m. In USA, they are very strict with the diving qualifications. So don't think you can do deeper then 18m, till you upgrade.

Going deep does not mean there is nothing to see. Coral reefs usually do not go more then 20+ m, as there is not enough sunlight going thru to sustain the coral growth. Going deeper usually is for wrecks, big fishes.

100m? you will have to be in the water with at least 3 tanks, with mixed specialised gases and lots of special(tech) training. doing safety(called deco) stops in the sea for like a few hours depending on how deep and how long you are in the water.

Hope this helps.

Actually you can buy general travel insurance for that specific trip. I know that AIG travel insurance covers recreational diving without any additional loading on the premium. The policy will also cover personal items and dive gear up to $500 per item. The premiums are v affordable for short trips within Asia.

sorry for my blunt reaction  i apologise ...

yeah, not to mention you can continue diving at 100m, given all the training and special training, by the time you can dive to that depth, you would be diving for recreational purposes anymore ..

about the depth that you can go to, i am sure you would not be diving in usa alone. certain places they are ok with bringing you down to a deeper depth as long as you are comfortable with it. i went to 20 plus metres though i am just an open water diver. if you go out diving with a whole bunch of DM friends etc, and they know your capability, they might even bring you on a night dive, even though you may not be qualified to. of course, by rules and regulations these are not allowed la.

it is still better that you go through the courses and really understand what you will be going through on a real dive to deeper depths or different conditions. then you will be more prepared and enjoy your dive under safe conditions.

again, i apologise for my blunt reaction :embrass:

hi .. ya it is me again. i just spent the last ten min reading through the posts on this thread. dunno if it helps, but wanna add on to a few points that i have noted. lets see what i can remember...

triggerfish - triggerfish aint really very big. they are not dangerous when in groups. only when it is a lone fish. what one dm told me was that when you see a triggerfish do not fin upwards nor downwards, thats how they can attack you. fin right or left, and keep your eyes on the fish.

bleeding nose and ears: it is due the air spaces being not equalised properly, but besides dumbos who pinch their noses during ascents, people with sinus problems or flu may face the same problem. i have a friend who has sinus problems, and it is almost a confirm thing that he will have nose bleed after ascending. advice: for those who know you have a sinus problem, when you descend, do not equalize by pinching your nose. shake your jaw instead. from what my friend told me, it helps a lot.

gloves - gloves can protect your hands, but please take note not to anyhow touch just because you are protected. first, reef gloves arent very protective, you still might get injured as sharp objects can pierce through. next, and more importantly, marine life cannot tahan divers anyhow touch one. be a responsible diver okie, you would wanna leave those marine natives intact after your dive so that they would still be around a few years later.

clumsy diver - mm, natural for beginner divers. just take note that underwater, you move slower, in order to be not clumsy. hastening your movements doesnt help. and ya, in the process, you kill marine life with a stumble or trip on the corals. i can be very clumsy too la, but with practice and constant self observation, no way you will remain as a clumsy diver ^_^

choppy waters - it not only depends on the site, also depends on the timing you go. this i dunno how to see ah, my friend told me some full moon no moon thing, i have yet to understand, haha

tiredness after diving - nitrogen is a lethargic gas. the more and deeper you dive, the more dissolved nitrogen you have in your blood. it makes you tired. thats before you reach the stage of nitrogen narcosis la, haha. by that time you dont even need alcohol ;p

waiting to jump into the waters - if you are a bit afraid, or uncomfy with not being in the waters for some time, or you easily garang garbok, it is good to be the first or second one to jump in and wait for the rest. then you would have time to say hi to the waters, get settled down and prepare for your descend. i know, cos i was ULTRA gan jiong on my open water dive and I was FORCED to jump down first. hehe

cold pills - mm, according to rules, please dont use cold pills to relieve of blocked nose so you can dive. may cause invert blocks, those that can cause the nose and ear bleeds.

underwater photography - your buoyancy must be steady enough, which would definitely improve with practice and plenty of self observation

dunno what i said is correct or not la, but these are what i know lor ^_^ please correct me if anyone knows otherwise hor.

beivied!! so long the post!!
;p
where to start commenting?

Anyway, for me, usually if I know the capabilities of the diver,
eg. like my friend and is a OW rating. I would bring them down to 30m and night dive too. But it depnds on the dive conditions and diver

haha, hi lanxx

i am very eng at work one ma, so i could start reading from the start of the thread till the end lor. at first i thought i would see recommendation of dive sites etc ma.

ya, it really depends on the capability of the divers you are with, and the conditions. if whole lot garang garbok like me, go 20 metres you would also wanna think twice :bsmilie:
