Yah all the free gifts are cheapo. When you start doing your research on tripods, you'll realise that Stein Zeiser sell the cheapest tripods out there, and in my opinion, even flimsier than some of the China brands out there. But, as the photoshop guru Scott Kelby once said, the cheapest tripod can do a better job than the most expensive lens with IS, VR, OS ever made.

I was given the cleaning kit, and while it does a great job of cleaning my mirror and glass table, I am hesitant when it comes to putting unknown chemicals on my lenses. The blower it comes with doesn't blow any air at all either.

The filters are not bad though. even if it doesn't do a better job than other brands, it at least protects your lens from dust and prints.

Was it a dry box or dry cabinet?

Well said !! LOL at the idea of using lens cleaner as mirror and glass cleaner :)

No idea what it is - a dry box or cabinet or just a dry shoe box :) Will know in two weeks. I was not even aware of this dry xxx concept until today, else would have at least asked the sales guy !!

I too would love to have the Tokina Fish-eye !! (I intend to use my 500D for mostly general family portraits and lots of family outings which is mostly landscape)

Hi Guys,

I'm jumping onto the bandwagon of DSLR and pinpointed 500D as the model which i intend to purchase.

However, I'm in a dilemma on which packages to choose from :

A) 500D Body + Canon EF-S 18-200M F3.5 - 5.6 IS
B) 500D Body + Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS + EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS
C) 500D Body + EF-S 17-85mm f4.0-5.6 IS USM + EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS

I've not find out about the costing.. I want an everyday lens + a zoom len which i can use for travelling.

Kindly advise

Cheers!

First of all welcome to the family lol hmm you have already stated right haha everdaylens + zoom lens so i reckon EFS 18-200mm IS to be the choice, excellent for travelling. The rest like 18-55mm or 55-250mm u can get it in B&S as pple is off loading the kit so its cheap graps.

Cheers

A) Kit II, more expensive kit. However, you do get a very nice all in one lens, very convenient especially when travelling. However the lens is "heavy" compare to the 18-55mm which you might feel troublesome to bring out for ocassional shoots

B) Kit I + 55-250mm is cheaper than Kit II. Pro is that u get extra 50mm reach at the tele-end and you do get a very light combination of 500D+18-55mm which is easy to carry around. However the downside is that u have to change lens which some may find it troublesome

C) Dont think there is such a combi, which may result in you buying 500D body + lenses seperately. Would be more expensive than kit II if u buy all brand new. Of cuz, u do get USM from 17-85 which is very invaluable, at least to me.

Just curious, would u like to comment about why USM is invaluable to you, and what do u often shoot? Slow or fast figures / situations?

It is important in situations whereby your objects are moving or when u have very little window to nail a shot. Eg. animals, creatures, insects, kids, street...

Of cuz when u have the luxury of time when your object is there for you to shoot, you can do manual focus and take your own sweet time. Eg. landscape, buildings, portraits (only if your model is patient and doesnt fidget or run ard like kids)

Haa, if you're into portraiture, you should consider getting a prime lens. The 50mm F1.8 that I'm using is cheap, got it free from the Canon online registration. If you've got the money, then try getting a 35mm or 28mm F1.4 instead. These prime lenses are great for portraits, and useful in lowlight conditions like churches and museums.

Hmm, I'd get package A for travelling. I'm using an 18-200 and it's great as an everyday lens too.

Of course if you got the budget and you don't mind changing lens once in awhile, Package C looks great!

Thanks for the advice, if i am inclined towards package C as i rather save the money from kit lens and invest 17-85 and 55-250.

Thanks! As i'm pretty new to this hobby so for the time being i will try to purchase from retailer than B&S. ;)

Thanks for the detailed advice!

Anyone has a ballpark figure how much will C cost? 2k++?

Actually i am thinking B vs C which is better

Just my 2 cents :)
I would recommend Package C minus the 55-250mm lens.

Use the 17-85 to first determine what kinda photos do you usually take or am more interested in taking.

From the pictures you usually take to then determine if you are more into portrait, landscape, macro or wildlife (duno wat word to use, it means tele zoom lens)

Hi Edward, welcome! =)

Nice to miss you too?

btw, the list outdated le. You should be number 212 or somthing

Alright let me quote you RRP prices. Of cuz street price and 2nd hand price are much lower

A) Kit II - $2099
B) Kit I + 55-250mm - $1399 + $549 = $1948
C) Body + 55-250mm + 17-85mm = $1199 + $549 + $1199 = $2947

Hi guys,

I am considering of getting a 500D but not sure if I should buy it as a kit. Is the lens good with fast focusing? I do understand that I cannot compare a kit lens with the USM ones but I will love to have some decent focusing speed to capture my daughter who is constantly moving around.

I am currently using my sister's 400D to shoot and I find the kit lens is rather slow in focusing but when mounted with my Canon 50mm F1.4 USM, I get the speed and accuracy.

Has the kit lens of 500D improved with speed and accuracy? Or is there alternative lens with a small range of zoom which I can consider if I am just buying the 500D body?

By the way, how is the price of the body and kits? Anyone bought recently? I recieved a quote from MS, $1080 - Body & $1250 - Kit I.

Thanks in advance for the advises! :)

Oh, I only found this name list.... Where get the full list?:)

Oh, I only found this name list.... Where get the full list?:)

Haa, there's no full list. it stopped being updated several pages ago. It came back for awhile, but it was the wrong list. So there's no complete list.

Nvm la, we all know we're all 500D users here. So unless there's a real need for the list, don't think it'll be revived.

How does 500D different from Alpha 550 ? My friend is toying with the idea of buying either 1 of these.

If you choose 500D we said welcome, if you choose Alpha 550 we said.... hehe .... Depand on which model you like....

hey guys... for those who have efs 18-55mm kit lens..
can i check with you guys what are your serial numbers?

mine was 58741xxxxx but i got a lens changed to new serial 55525xxxxx.
i discovered a duller tone in the new lens.
Is the original kit lens made specially for the body or is it the same across all the lens?

01 x 8gb high speed SDHC, canon bag and canon book is given by Canon SG themselves thus MS color is giving you an extra 8gb shdc.

However, the promo for the free 50mm F1.8 has ended on 25th nov alr.

So the current offer by MS Color is average price and items you will get.
The savings from 1299 - 1150 can be used to buy a dry cabinet which will be very useful

cheers :)
