i'm thinking of just bring the 12-24 and 35 for rome and leave the 24-70 at home.. any advice? how safe is rome for you?

Among the 3 lens, I would prefer to bring the 12-24 for wide shorts, interiors of churches/museums
And use the 24-70 for general shots including streets/portraitures (at time I need it to crop away unsightly people/objects that doesn’t compliment the subject or compositions). Personally, I find the 35 not useful since u hv a 12-24, however, it depends on you, the type of photography and how you want to express yr experience…there is no ultimate lens for any occasion…

Rome- Generally, it’s safe if u stay away fm dark lanes and quiet areas. keep yr passport in the hotel safe, carry enug cash for the day and keep the rest in separate pockets, most important be alert. I stayed out quite late upto 11pm at times but usually where there are still some other tourists around.

I like traveling light too...it's a holiday not an overseas assignment..i just want to capture my experience and share them with my frens.

I carried a 24-105L and a Sigma 12-24 with 5D and 7D(my wife use it with a 17-85). Most of the shots were done with 24-105 except for those interior and landscape shots. All nite scenes were taken with high ISO without tripod too (too heavy and clumsy to carry around la).

I agree with Dapier, 35 is not wide enug for most of the interior shots. But I trust you will find a work around the lens...it depends on what you want to showcase.

from my personal experience, 12-24 and 24-70 are too wide for street shots. Having tried those mentioned earlier, I still prefer 70-200mm for street shots

Just to share an interesting pickpocket incident in Rome….happened to my fren and his family….


My fren offered to keep all the passports in his multiple pockets jackets, jokingly said it’s difficult for pickpockets to target him.

Very soon, he was bumped by a lady and realized that all the passports were missing. The whole family panicked but before they could decide what to do………he got bumped again…this time u wat happened??:embrass:




They put all the passports back to the same pocket and picked another pocket…..
But this time they got away with their travel neck pillow…..what a joke ….lucky guy ……:sticktong

Unfortunate pickpockets….but it showed they skill is superp

Hi people! I am going to Italy and 5 other countries in Europe this June too. But still haven decide what lens to get or bring.

I have a 5D and 500D, 20-35mm,50mm f1.8, 18-200mm and 100mm macro f2.8.

Which lens or body do your recommend? Or should I get new lens like 24-105, 24-70 or 17-40?

Should I bring two bodies? Heard that budget airline at Europe only allow 8kg bag luggage, if I bring two bodies, confirm exceed weight with all my other stuffs.

Heard that f2.8 is useful in taking pictures inside churches and museums.

okk, this might sound stupid but can i ask when out in the streets, does one need to bring his/her passport out? how about a photocopy of it or ask the police to come to your accomodation with you if he wants to check? if he's genuine enough, i think he probably wouldn't mind to go all the way with you?

5d definitely. better quality pictures. but u might want to consider a 24-105 as a single lens to replace the options. why do u need 2 bodies? travel as light as you can and not attract too much attention on yourself!
budget airlines allow u to buy allowance or checked-in luggage. ryanair allows 10kg and no limit for easyjet btw.

I would choose 5D, 17-40 (U need this for churches/museums interior shots); 24-105 is more for street and other general shots.

I agree with Drumma, 2 bodies will draw too much attentions.

All my interiors were shot with high ISO1600.

yup, flash is not allowed in Churches and Museums, but with ISO 1600 at F4 is good enug....

I took a shot of the statue in front of the Ministry of Defence in the morning.
By late morning, i took the same shot again....i was stopped by the police.
They told me that they spotted me taking the some shot in the morning too. They explained that they hv the right to search my bags and take down my particulars under the anti-terrorist act and issued me a "Notice". Later they also said it was ok to take picture and they maintained their right to check me out too.

So keeping yr passport by yr side is important but make sure it's safe.

But I wanted to get something I would use in Sg. Cause I usually take Portraits. 17-40 is very wide, but not useful in portraits.

Can I ask you, what's the maximum mm you used with your lens in Europe? 40mm?

Would you reccomend a camera back pack or a sling bag to carry around in Italy? or Europe in general? Equipment prbly 1 body and a couple of lenses and may be a film body as well.

thanks for the reply.. hmm. i heard another side of the story which goes something like police won't ask for your passport usually. and it's one of the many pickpocket scams that they will distract u etc.. is it more for convenience sake that one brings along his passport when out walking in the streets or? i was thinking if a valid ID is good enough.
