sure why not..what is your definition of portraiture?be warned though that to get a tight shot (i.e. head shot ) using that focal length, you have to be very close to your subject which might distort perspective, don't know if that appeals to you..

use this lens for dog portraiture?

On 1.6x crop camera, the focal lengths should be ok for taking full body portraiture with minimum distortion (try to place your subject in the middle of the frame)
