Canon Photo Marathon 2008 Review

The main thing is that they never specified that the Photomarathon can only consist of shots taken impromptu on the streets. Sure it is a little strange to allow submissions from a studio in what appears to be a street shooting competition but neither did the organisers explicitly disallow it.

hi ts, since u think u know what judges and canon wants, next year u join and submit photos like that lor, if u join with the aim to be in the top 3.

seriously, we at Eye E City also gets lots of feedback like "what the hell, like that also kana selected", "not sharp also can mah?" etc.

but until u join us as full time volunteer, as facilitator and than in the judging of the photos, u will than know the amount of effort and debate involved in the process.

yes, some photos submitted may be better than the winning ones in any competitions, but if what u have submitted isn't what they want, than why should they select it?

it is the same with life mah, does it means a very cute looking girl will get a modeling job for high fashion? dont think so, maybe cos-play or car expo they can get.

I have to agree with the thread starter.

I was disappointed with how the judging turned out. I know I saw some way better photos during the slide show.

Sorry to say that I didn't like close-up shots of posters and "forced" posings.

It feels like the judges went for gut feel. It didn't look like they used some criteria like x% theme, x% composition, etc. etc.. If you noticed, there was no consistency in the selected entires.

I really believe there was no criteria points system in place. Why would it even take them so long to judge the last theme? There's nothing to debate about if they had points system.

Although in the end, it really was a marketing gimmick.

Next year, I'll probably just bring a point and shoot. No point brining multiple lenses for this. Might even just go there to get the shirt.

I think the title of the competition should be changed to :-

Canon Photo- INDOOR shoot or
Canon Photo- STUDIO shoot...

Because there is no a sense of marathon in the wining shots, why make people wear the canon T-shirt walk everywhere in the streets and then you end up selecting those studio and indoor shots ? no point right ! :bsmilie: :bsmilie: :bsmilie:

Please do not be too serious about the above statement, just to loosen up the conversation a bit.

sorry.. double post.

i cant help to agree with the TS, i think for those running all around with the theme in their mind, what they want to capture, it is so disappointed to see someone with studio shots actually won over most of the judges. We all thought this is suppose to be a photo marathon? literally walk around and capture something for the theme.

I discuss this with a friend, and she said, she too have the same feeling last year, thats why she just dont bother to move around this year, instead treat this a gathering with friends. 30% of ur time spend in thinking for the theme in starbucks, 10% of ur time go out and shoot, 20% of ur time go help your other team mates to shoot, and 40% go back relax at the hall or walk around have a good meal.

Thats what i am planning to do next year, maybe with a pns. haha.
seriously i feel that this has become a non-standards competition, more like canon photo carnival, thats just me.

i only wear the event shirt in the holding area. when i'm outside, i take it off.

Maybe to add, the themes were so hard. People were just scratching their heads.

That's probably why nobody bothered to go around to shoot. So most pics ended up too comical.

next yr they should supply us with lots of 1dsMIII or 5DMII & we can walk around as free advertisements for their products. ;p

if like that, even if someone submits a blank photograph & win the top prize, i also don't mind !!! :bsmilie:

it's sad, but the fact is canon photo marathon is not a "street photography" competition,
it's a competition that allowed people to do anything to get answer for the theme, and get good photo in 3 hours time ( or more :) )
so can't blame in how people do it, because there is no rules for no posed shot from the first place..

Last week was my 3rd photo marathon, i still enjoyed it, gather with old friends, fooling around while shooting, laughing hard while seeing the slideshow, practically having fun for a whoile day... and i will still looking forward to join the 2009 one :)

i've submitted 10 photos for canon photo marathon ( 4 at 2006, 3 at 2007, 3 at 2008 ) i can say half of my shot are posed, but my personal favourite is still the unposed one, the 2007 "playtime" ( and as we can guess, i didn't win anything with this photo lol )

random useless thought ( don't read it with serious mind lol )
"it's hard to be a so called "street photographer", normal people see they said it's random shot, submit salon kena reject, send to photo competition cannot win, then got event that we thought an event for street photographer, still lost by studio shot, aiyo.. next time wake morning take sunrise photoshop the sky until pink color, then can already lah" :):)

great shot!

not really, read through all the similar thread and u find they said the same thing last year, the year before ........

so, for people who wants to win, why still shoot "street shots" when u already knows what works and what not.

not sure nowadays, last time we have ten years series, if want to score high marks, work through those problem. else, blame it on urself lor.

added : did the r&r state no studio and arranged shots allow? if yes, than i feel u guys have a cause to be unhappy, else.....

Ok everyone.... I can't agree more.

The judges er.... are they capable to select the winning photos in 1 hour time?
Treat it more like "eye-catching" photos. Not a good composition, correct exposure, good lighting.... all this doesn't exist in the rush judgment.

Next year, Canon should rename the competition as Canon Photo Shoot Out Competition 2009.
How do we define a award winning photograph?

The one thing I doesn't understand is the Staged Posed Photos.
Those people came alone, How?

Why the same competition name the participating countries, when our winning photos doesn't even come close to the Competition name?

Like this, Singapore don't have Blue Sky, we too near the equator. In Australia, a PnS camera with no polariser filter can get beautiful Blue Sky.
No Clear sea, like Milo. Hawaii got nice tap water looking Sea.

How for next year?

Can anyone in this thread indicate some worth winning shots for the short listed entries? Just 1 photo from each theme in the Open Cat.

Thanks.

Maybe the aguement here is not about wining the competition but the integrity and standard of the Singapore Photographer.

We will not want ppl from aboard to have a idea that this is wat we can produce .

We can produce better pic than this definately

Just my 2 cent worth;)

i agree with ts to a certain extent.. the name of the competition is canon photo marathon.. but going to a studio to take a shot doesn't fit with the whole theme of the competition, which to me, is going out there to get a shot based on the theme given within the time stipulated..

anyway, I don't mind some posed shots.. it might bring a stronger message to the picture.. but maybe some shots were just too... over-posed??

its true what some has mentioned about not complaining but working around the problem to get what the judges want, but different judges would want different things every year, so its not easy to predict..
