I got my DSLR from AMK Courts, though the price was slightly higher than the rest of the reputable shops, but I guess it's worth it. The saleman was very convincing, he knows that I'm new to SLR and gave me a "crash course" on the different type of DSLRs, lenses, equipments etc and gave me all the info I needed. So much better than those "reputable shops".

hmmm...looks like I have another supporter for large electronic retailers! :) haha.

But to be exactly fair to all other shops, any of these large retailers will also have their share of black sheeps. Just that I feel that they are generally very helpful. You should go to Best Denki at Bishan Junction 8. I've bought many things from there, ranging from LCD TVs to fridge to washing machines, to fax to XBOX360, to ..you get what I mean... Those guys are just amazing. It's almost to the point of me sitting at a counter, and they just bring what I want to the counter. Haha... Once, the salesman even help me fill up 90++ coupons with my particulars, for the lucky draw... too bad i didn't win the cefiro, cos I told him I'll split with him if I win. haha.

up for TK foto, very frendy ppl there, not alot of customer, and the price is bagus

If you go to TK or John 3:16 at the right times, they will also give you a crash course. You should avoid John 3:16 on Saturdays, weekdays at 6-8pm. If you can get there at around 3-5pm, it's actually quite empty and they'll even have a good chat with you and teach you all about the equipment.

You have to look at it from a sales person point of view. They need to survive and every customer matters to them. You cannot blame them if they have so few staff to manage a large crowd. They try their best, and I'm sure that their best is just not enough for some customers. Having worked in sales, I totally understand it from both sides of the coin. Sometimes no matter how hard you try, some customers may just be unreasonable, self-centered and even obnoxious (not intending this toward anyone of course, just a general statement from experience).

Most shops will tend to mark up their prices on harder-to-get items and others may be selling at higher price initially. For example, Cokin GND filters are selling at almost double the price at OP compared to CP when I last enquired but the stock is much harder to get at CP

After buying couple of items from almost all the reputed shops (except AP), I find there is really no point in trying to bargain. I will gladly pay for the item if the difference is no more than 10% above the average researched price, the service is good and stock is readily available. When you frequent more and you are being a nice customer yourself, the sales staff may give discount without having to bargain for it. Previously, I had bought a couple of TTP items from TK and recently I bought a few more and was given discount without asking for it :)

bought my camera at challenger. Got some nice freebies.

OP - very good service for me, I appreciate their friendliness and honesty. I am patient with them, and so when they attend me, they take time to answer my question as well.

Alan - hmm, a bit reluctant to shop in there, but will be getting my dry cabinet there soon. Took a courage to go yesterday night, talk in a friendly way to them and got a friendly answer too.

Other shops in sim lim and Orchard rd (opposite ngee ang), wow, please do not enter these shops.

Ang Mo Kio MS Color - Did not like the higher price.

Cathay - Bad experience when you know nothing.

Cheers, Christophe

I hope everyone finds their nice little place to go to. Everyone happy and all shops have their share of business. ;)

My various experiences at buying a cheapo protective filter for some of my lens...
CP - Bought it at $10 even though the listed price is $15. no bargaining needed
MS - Insist on selling at $15. When refuse to buy, pull a long face and reduce to $10
TK - Ask for the "cheap $10 filter", sell to me at $8 instead. no bargaining needed

Now I know which shop is more trustworthy.

oh no... MS sounds like it's not friendly to pple they dun know. For those regulars, sure, they are good and all.. but if you are walking into a shop just like that... bad.... I'll hesitate to recommend pple to the shop then.

how good or how many people recommend i still believe in doing my homework b4 unloading my cash.

Looks like T K Foto has got the most number of Good votes thus far, actually haven't heard from anyone that they are no good or complaint about them.

Price wise, they are really resonable coz i went around asking for the price of the SanDisk Extreme Card Reader, most shops quoted me $45 and above, the one price T K Foto gave me after refering to their price list and press a few buttons on the calculator, i got the reader + a McDonald's value meal (cost of it). That's something i know now, at T K, you don't have to hassle them for discount, what they quote you is really the price you. Feel free to check around, trust me, you will go back to them one.

BTW, check out their canon Selyphy printers there, there are offering very competitive and attractive price currently (maybe for those who buy camera from them), i am going to buy one from them tomorrow when i go down town! Another place to get Canon Selphy is Harvey Norman at Funan!

Well for Harvey Norman, BEST Denki and Courts, its more of package price, which i feel at DSLR level, alot of free things they throw in not really much value for money so i will still stay to shops like T K, John 3 etc... at least you really know what you buying with the help from them, and what more, they are really more competitive.

Happy Shopping... maybe we may all bump to one another at T K one day.

Well said. Some of the package might be useless to a large proportion of the customers... Like... errr... mini tripod?! haha. Anyway, there are also knowledgeable staff at Harvey Norman. The guy who attended to me was very well informed... rattling about memory card speeds for read/write. Damn impressed...

On the other hand, the one at south asia computers.... damn... he told me Canon G9 no stock cos it's going to be phased out soon, to be replaced by G10. Haha...

everyone's mileage varies.

I did not get great service from them. I went there to test out the D300. After testing some time (10 mins perhaps) , the salesman told me to stop as he said "the shutter count on the camera will increase" and he will have difficulty selling it off. I was only firing occasional shots - testing the AF

This is the first time I have come across such a scenario - many other shops, Alan, Cathay, John, etc allow me unrestricted testing of the camera. Throughout my visit there, I did not feel any warmth in the shop - certainly not 10/10 - salesman was pretty cold and eventually resulting in that shutter count remark. I would rate it as 5.5/10 just above passing point

There is nothing really wrong with what they have done - the service was just above passing point - it's just very businesslike - but certainly no where near the 10/10 some of you have been raving about.

Would I visit this shop again? Too bad the answer is No ....

goering, maybe they didn't spot you as a potential. I hate it when salesman size you up and mark you out as either 'will buy' or 'waste time'. sigh...

dont they have a display set for you to test instead of taking a new cam out from the box?

T K foto is the one I frequent now..
Cathay.. got a very bad experience there.. more for the attitude of that sales that attend to me.. so much so.. I have already black listed them

Oriental Photo.. well.. walk in on one weekday.. went one around.. saw three ppl sitting down.. and one playing PSP.. no one serve me.. so will not go there again.. Was buying a grip for my D300 then.. end up in....

TK where I got my grip + 50mm f1.4D + future buys.

OP the ppl there normally dont attend to you unless you got something to ask them 1st.
the way they provide customer service is not very sg style.
so if you prefer ppl to come up to you like taka promoters then is not going to work that way in OP unless you're a regular customer.
