why was our soldiers used as movers after NDP?

I find this thread hard to believe. Not because of the many sensible and objective replies, but by the fact that TS can even be shocked and angered by something like that.

Amazing.

When it is time to rest, rest. I have not conducted stand by bunk, told my guys it is their own living quarter, they decide how they want to sleep or rest. Unlike many, because they were punished by sergeant while they were trainees so its time to do it on others. Pls don't tell me this is not true cause I was a soldier n many of my friends too. We have stand by eqpt were regular wearing all white goes into the engine compartment (yes, some of the eqpt I handle is that big) n expect to come out all white. For most who cannot imagine this let me give u better example, Sargent trying to find fault by wiping surfaces or using rulers digging out dust from gaps.

There are reasonable things to do when it comes to training of a soldier, but it doesn't means last time like that now still must continue.

Also like I mentioned, why can't vehicles go to the location or better tools are provided?

My CO always tell us, be a thinking soldier.

Those who have serve knows how much time was wasted during the NSF duration doing nothing, wait to rush, rush to wait... And there are all these events to do, setting up and cleaning up of events etc. I am for NS and would like our solider to be well drill and well train to win the war. I don't like the idea of them sitting around doing non constructive work or non military duties. If there is too much time then cut the NSF period and not asking them to do non military work to fill up their 2 years of NS training.

So, you guys are unhappy because for 10 saturdays a year, about 50 men from just one unit have to clear roadblocks.

And now even more issues come up. It's not as if you haven't served NS before. But feel that more things should be outsourced. Good job. Next, we should tell our NSmen that it's their choice whether they want to carry on with their 10-year cycle. It doesn't stop there.

BTW when my formation was in charge of NDP, we did everything. I still believe that such things, no matter how "useless" you deem them to be, serve their purposes.

What you're implying is that when we have our jobs, we should not bother with other things out of our job scopes. This leads to lesser experiences and lesser daring men and women who just want to "do what I'm paid for and go". This is a problem because soon, everything becomes "not my problem, why should i do it". This mentality should be removed if we want our later generations to perform better

What this experience teaches the young soldiers, is to be able to do things outside their job scope.

Every generation faces own unique difficulties. To those my age, we call young ones strawberry. But know this, I can still (barely) buy a HDB & now many are happily selling n buying to make money (can't blame FT alone who drive up properties). The so call strawberry generation will be the one most hard hit, much more than us, not only buying properties but getting a job to feed their family. So I hope u guys can stop acting like u are so up there to call young man strawberry generation.

logical argument.

unless the Logistics officer think army boy is much more affordable than petrol / diesel ...

or maybe they want the FT and tourist to see how MAN our army boys are; carrying the barrier with their muscle.. to the nearest truck...

TS, no point soaking in here, as nothing makes sense to those narrow-minded people..

Outsource to company who hire more FT and in the end we complain why there are so many FT in Singapore......
that is a sweeping statement. this subject need profound understanding of the whole chain. FT are different Blue collar foreign worker. and please don't rake up this sensitive issue within this thread

Cook house sub out to SFI, couches / buses are used to farry man to training. Nothing wrong to outsource some work, in this case moving the blockages.

Yes the moving companies may have lots of movers to do manual labour which Singaporean typically don't do. These companies if we go by the quota by MOM also employ citizens, so what I see is win win situation.

Else provide the proper tools for our soldiers to do the job efficiently n effectively. I don't see the need to use this as opportunity to get our man to do their physical training, like many has pointed out. If at all we want to train our man, train them to work smart!

Also, question to those who kept asking me if I served NS or which units I belongs to. It seems u are asking for my qualifications, so my turn (though I find this childish, but to lessen the tension in this thread), how many are top 3 in 1/2 of those army training courses, how many has more than 3 top trainee awards like me. How many were course sergeant for courses for man, specialist n officers? How many were selected to cross over from specialist to officer? How many were asked by OC, CO to sign on? So basically I want to ask if I m qualify to comment what I commented?

Umm... honestly, I don't see anything wrong with NS-men clearing plastic road block.

I saw one of my friend setup a barbed wire fence. I guess moving the plastic road block is a lot less dangerous than playing with razor barbed wire.

after your reply...

i'm really saddened that there are illustrious NSF personnel like you who think that "going the extra mile" is deemed "unnecessary".

Glorious Exposition Comarade

No offence, but all these simply show that you are NOT qualified to comment.

You take the narrow view of what is my job is my job, what is not my job I won't bother. This falls into the realm of selfishness.

Outsource? Sure they can outsource. But what value does it provide? In EVERY nation, soldiers do more than the basic perception of what it means to be a soldier.

Soldiering is also being part of a community.

So in conclusion, all your "qualifications" are not an indication that you have are qualified to comment.

Sure, I feel that many things can be done better, and many soldiers HAVE suggested things that can be done better.

However it is not just about working smart. It's also about how you learn to manage yourself, your subordinates AND your superiors. I hope all your "qualifications" have taught you that.

you statement itself is shallow and unfounded.

please, provide information to us to show us exactly how many Foreigners own the majority of HDBs and Private Properties in Singapore before making such sweeping statements

i beg your pardon. you're coming in here to do what? yap away with no solid evidence and pursue your (as usual) anti-government rhetoric that everyone who's against your views, is someone who's narrow-minded or beneath you.

well done.

our lives are in your hands, soldier.

1st ask if I served NS. Now reversed. Hahaha. This is getting more like this for that.
