OT a bit. I think NS should be reduce to 6 months. Those who wants more can "sign on" with full regular pay for the next 2 years.

It's more about the core duties of NSF. They are in NS to protect the country, sharpening their skills with exercise and mission.
U sure this is the objective ?
More liking training all MEN to be a obedient DOG. "Yes, SIR"

Please tell me what can be learned in 6mths ?? It take at least 3mth just to teach the basic... 4-5mth if your physical is no good... then who is filling up the units like Armour, Combat Engineers etc... let me guess... everyone but you ??

With our current Strawberry Generation, who hasn't face much hardship beside needing to score A* for his exams... how many you think will be willing or needing to sign on ?? Most if not all could get better pay outside... or have parents that could feed and housed them till well into their 30s... if you have some ways or methods to get this Generation to sign on... please share with us and MINDEF how it could be done... they have been having problem getting regulars for years and years...

You ever lead or were given the responsibility to get something done ?? And all you have to work with is a brunch of people that don't give a sh*t... when you do... you'll know why OBEDIENT and COURT MARTIAL is necessary to get people to do things they normal.won't want to... from working in the weekend, pulling weeds... to charging up a hill under fire...

All this scope-of-work, mot related to soldier training comes down to a simple crap mentality-it's someone else's responsibility.

Can be seen on food center tables and everywhere else where a loose end can be left behind legally.

The only thing 3G about our army is that everyone carries a 3G phone.

Don't kid yourselves, we're just a third world with a first world infrastructure. The brains still got a long way to go.

It has been a practice for the last 48years does not necessary mean or make it is a right one.

It's a common practice worldwide, not just SG. u wan to say the world is wrong?

Even the most democratic country, USA uses its army for such events.

I can't disagree with you on the third world with a first world infrastructure. Our brains are not developed yet.

i can see the usual anti-government/anti-military service proponents appearing.

sheesh. so many half-baked ideas without any thought or backing-up statements.

from what i infer, you guys weren't in the command batch, never lead men, never had roles with any form of responsibility. you were the ones trying to get Attend Cs throughout your NS Life, or exemptions from particular duties.

so that's why you think that NS is tough.

it isn't tough.

it's just that you're too weak.

and i hope that your kids don't become as weak as you are. that would be a cause of concern for Singapore's defence, should anything come up.

can lah.... just do it and don't complaint.

what's the big deal seriously....

We are first world people. How can we work like labourers and coolies!

We must get all those third world people to do all these menial tasks.

As a true blue Singaporean, we can only be allowed to sit back and bask on all the glory or other people's work. Lifting a finger is an absolute no no. Good luck to us.

I had interviewees, new job entrants, never asked about the job but asked about what's the company's work life balance. I reserved him for another company.

I saw the foreign workers having a great time while what you described was happening. What do you think?

A soldier needs to be obedient and carry out orders and not to question it. That is what makes a disciplined unit formidable with the right commanders.

If every soldier can question orders and ask why and debate, then it is not military and nothing gets done because everyone has their own selfish agendas.

If clean up after NDP is the order, clean up after NDP is what they need to do.

I m from Combat Engineer n through most if not all course, I m top 3 trainee, selected plus requested to sign on from specialist to officer rank. I go through more courses than a officer. But I don't see how this is relevant here.

Next nowadays we cannot comment on the "regular practices" because we will be labeled anti govt or NS?

Have you considered the security aspect?

There may be a more important reason why we depend on military to handle this, than meets the eye.

very nice... you just insulted about half of the SG population who served NS (in one way or another) by calling us Dogs... come, let me clap for you...

That you should observe more, think more .. and generalize / judge less.
Details and context ARE important ... Although many Stomp users and others tend to forget or ignore this. Yeah, why paying attention to the details when it's easy and convenient to generalize and shout?

Now I realise one shouldn't comment on a issue unless he has done the job before. So one can't say food is not good if he is not a cook, comment on picture if not painter or photographer.

Maybe something r just not for discussion?

Training of soldiers is more effective if time is spent on the drill of their units / function. Bridge builder spend time training building bridges, infantry train on their shooting n formation.

Physical training we had IPPT, SOC, LOG PT etc.
