This is a 100% crop of a shot with the 70-200 VR and the TC 1.7 at 340mm. This is shot wide open at f/4.8 so the depth of field is a little shallow.

holy holy!how the hell did u get so close to the birdies?

i. With a 10MP camera, there are more room to crop.

ii. Another reason could be because there are more open areas for birding in US as compared to Singapore.

anyone knows whether the TC will work just as well with the AF-D 80-200(2 touch)?

You will have to modify an AFS TC before you can mount it on the 80-200. There is an tab that restricts you from mounting it on any non-AFS lens.

oh so all Nikon TCs are for AF-S lens?

I goes on morning walk every weekends near where I live and found out that there are certain time and feeding areas where the bird likes.... of cos every bird is different. My advice is study your subject lifestyles and know the right time and area to shoot ... some time they might pose for u. It more fun to get close to them... so hand held and speed is importand ....that what so great about the 70 200 VR. I tried TC but it slow it down a bit and that tiny bit is a big problem for me and I can't get any sharp pic I likes with TC in the field. Again my advice is try to get closer first ,,which is free ..... if not get tc ( and live with what u get) or the 200 400 VR
$$$$.
I had the D70s, the D200 get way more details on white birds with the same setting.
Here are some the 100% without TC.
sorry about the big images

great shots finn. wow VR really makes that much of a difference....

Thanks
I shoot lots of surfers for fun during my morning walk with the 70 200Vr without TC too.
I alway have VR on active and AFC (The manual states VR only works with AFS) but I get sharper moving images 95% of the time with that setting.... and less with AFS... I think is the way I shoot. I modify a eyecup with the dk21 m and dk17m that help me to see better and all this small things work well for what I shoot.
The 70 200Vr and D200 is one of the main reason I stay with nikon as I use the 1ds mark II and all their L lense for work.... Hollywood visual effect movies.... but still prefer Nikon for many reasons... ( don't want to start the Nikon and Cannon tropic:angel: ) The reason I'm showing this pics is that ...you can get really close to your subject at 200mm with the 70 200VR. More reach is good but again find ways to get closer which is free.

would appreciate if you post big image, hyper link it instead of putting it directly as an image.

Use the URL tag.

It screws up the whole thread's formatting and everything is so slow.

Wah.. Superb shots.. How did u get so close without the birds knowing?

I had the Nikon TC 1.7 and rented the 1.4 ... and finally given up on TC for the 70-200Vr.
As I can't get what I normally get from the 70 200 hand held.
I'm Still thinking of getting the Nikon 200 400 F4 $$$$ ...but for now just move closer to the birds (which is free). Forget about using TC if you are looking for IQ and speed on the 70 200VR.

Those pics are taken with no TC hand held on bad lighting day.

Sorry about the big images, just relinked them.
Thanks again

A bird costume will do the trick:thumbsup: but still cost $$

They normally don't fly away from their feeding area during their feeding time or wait for them at their feeding area. I move very slowy toward my target with the 70 200vr and Control my breathing before I shoot.... that what I learnt from SAF (now I know those SAF trainning are useful ).... I was a MG gunner then and the mg is about 15KG I think, that was 10yrs back..... use my gloves for turtle crawl

ROFL!!!
I guess if the birds are fooled by those suits, there must be some truth to the term "bird brained"
