Where can I shoot in Melbourne?

Please remember to wear your sunnies, wear a safari hat (baseball cap not enough), apply your sunscreens (slip, slap, slop everyone! ) and put your polarizer on in the day time. Melbourne in Jan is very hot and dry, esp near the Aussie open; drink lots of water!. Another thing that you may find irritating is the flies... . Enjoy yourselves!

DO REMEMBER that even though it can be summer or what not, Melbourne is famed for:-

"4 seasons in 1 day"

so..always be prepared

summer times can get pretty scorching but at times only...and at night temperatures can plummet really fast and low.

go lygon street (streetful of 100+ italian restaurants, next to unimelb). For cheap and good pasta, go visit UNIVERSAL cafe, NOT UNIVERSITY CAFE!!! 2 different places.... if u got some moolah to splurge and treat yourself, try the cakes and delicacies at Brunettis, or best, go Cafe Greco at Crown casino
u can also do with a late late late late or early(?) bite in the middle of the cold night at 2am, head for interjunction cafe and insist on their lamb slovaki and hot chocolate :thumbsup: :thumbsup:

BTW just to wet your appetite:- Sharkfin's house (or issit restaurant ah? yar 2 different places next to each other) has great dim sums (or the aussies lurve to call it dim sims after frying them ) voted american express best dim sum restaurant 2002?3?
the VIETNAMESE noodles at the corner of russel street is good just like the MEKONG restaurant at Burke street (where Jackie chan ate there for his filming previously)......whatelse?....hmmmm.....
CITY BBQ in Chinatown is great..just remember, PORTIONS ARE HUGE...and of course u pay too.... there are some chinese groceries stores where they sell mostly asian stuff.

smith street:- sportsaholic..... major sports apparells warehouses are there. for mountain climbing and other sports stuff
richmond:- shoppaholic street.......as it names suggests....SHOPPING in melbourne itself.

Oh BTW, since u're on unlimited pass, u should really plan your route carefully. maybe 2 odd days in Melbourne city proper (AS IN SOLID 2 FULL DAYS) and maybe another day travel with the rail to chadstone? or other places......

i miss that eversince i left melby. There isn't a shop in S'pore that has that apparently

I think Crown does that every night on the hour. Kinda makes you wonder how much they spend on gas each time it fires up.

By the way, there's this Christmas display going on in Crown. Not sure how nice it is though, cos the last time it was a little dark and I was just walking through. Didnt really stop to see what was going on cos I was late for a movie.

the last time i talked to the security (but will he know everything?) it costs about AUD$30,000 for one pillar of fireball

the tix will be half priced..but may NOT be the seats that u want lar...like 2 seats separated...but generally the angmohs are friendly enuf if they know u're a tourist to let u sit together.

if u go to greyhound or some dedicated coach palce, make sure u show them your international student card....

u can go to main chinatown and there's this 2 places where i use to eat for chinese meal lar


the one on the left.....is called "tang(2) chao(2)" and the lemongrass porkchop is :thumbsup: even though there's MSG

the universal cafe that i mentioned? that one is cheap and heaps! for pasta/pizza

10 bucks and the whole plate/pizza is gigantic

always ordered and got them to deliver to my residential college there

By chance you know of any smaller car rental companies then that allows age < 25 to rent a car? I'm trying to avoid the big boys .. i.e. hertz.. avis.. etc

Just thought I'd point out that it's possible to rent cars even if you're under 25, but you'll have to pay extra for insurance. Even though your friend got his license this year, he may still be able to rent a car even as long as it's not a Victorian license, since the people may not always notice the "Pass" date on the Singapore license.

Also, another place that's near the city would be Brighton Beach and Port Melbourne.

I think the various lookout points along great ocean road will be a breathtaking place to shoot sunset/sunrise.. imagine the ocean..cliffs...rocks and what have u as the backdrop... woOt!

on Saturdays, (dunno if they still do this) go to Crown casino where the tramstop is and get ready for the spouts of balls of fire that they pump into the air at night...hmmmmmm can't remember if they did that in Summer though (A)

You should find the food that the uni students eat; they are usually cheap and good. On Lygon street, A large pizza enough for 2 (or to make it into two meals ) is around $12, lunch you can get one pizza + 1 drink for $6. Alternatively is to make or buy sandwiches. I remembered two wholemeal egg sandwiches + sliced tomatoes around $3-4. Their b/f at the cafe around $4 is very filling but is the traditional eggs and bacon stuff that can make you :bwhat: .

Cup noodles? :ipuke: :flush: . Cheap food a plenty, like the Greek food at the start (closest to the city end) of Lygon street, across from the potatoe place/malaysian restaurant. $5-6 enough food for 1day! . In Chinatown, there is a restaurant along the street that sells Shanghainese xiao long bao and shui jiao. 15 cooked shui jiao for $4! 2-3 meals there!

I rented a car for the two days I was in Melbourne, but was so scared of the traffic that it stayed in the hotel carpark throughout the time I was there.

Just walk around the city or take the trams. Chinatown area is very happening.

aussie traffic rules got some slight difference...

u need to learn to do a HOOK turn. there's no such thing as a separate lane for turning.... (cept some places)..

there's however a separate lane for trams.

basically like what SS said....in Melby city, forget about the car rental..that should save u quite abit....u can get anywhere as long as u walk-tram...

dun worry, a seemingly long road is reachable without tiring yourself out in Aussie as compared to that in S'pore, coz its rather dry there

just remember, summer can be scorching hot, and can drop in temp as well. ALWAYS BE PREPARED

The various places along St Kilda beach is really nice for sunsets. Especially the St Kilda Port or something like that. The sunsets can be quite breath taking at times...been there many times just to take sunsets, although when I went yesterday, the place was infested with flies...sigh.
