tested two flashes by firing using manual mode and timing the duration before the flash ready light lits up:

Nikon SB24: 6s
Metz 32Z-1: 3s

what's yours?

What kinds of batteries are recommended for a faster flash cycle?

I'm using a 420EX for my Canon G1 and I notice that it'll take about 2 seconds for the flash to be ready if I use the Energizer e square Titanium batteries.

hmm... 2 seconds to be ready, as in when you turn it on or after firing the full flash in manual mode? For the more common batteries, I think Lithium ones have the fastest recharge times, followed bi NiMH/NiCD and alkalines.

SB-80Dx

1850 mAH Sanyo NiMH 3.93 seconds on full power to ready light after a full power discharge.

1000 mAH Unbranded NiCad 3.87 seconds on full power to ready light after a full power discharge.

Metz 60 CT4 - sub 3 seconds on full power with external SLA battery pack (10 Ah)

Sunpak 522 - 4.5 seconds with SLA pack as per the Metz.

All batteries freshly charged when tested.
