Spent an hour chasing down the Sandisk Extreme III CF USB 2.0 card reader on the telephone with the camera shops in Singapore. None available anywhere. Even posted WTB - no offers.

Any one has suggestions where to get one in Singapore? OR alternatives to the Sandisk Extreme III card reader?

Thanks!

my 400D direct connection is slow but 5DII directconnection is blazingly fast. 8GB in a few minutes.

I always resisted in using the direct connection for fear of damaging the rubber cover or the connector. But yes, I must give that a try and use it until I find a good reader. Thanks!

Thanks teebs. I have contacted them for this and waiting for their reply. Hopefully it will be a good and fair deal. They were asking for S$130 for both but prices for the card has dropped a lot of late.

I just collected the 8 GB and Reader from the seller above. He agreed to deal at $100 for both.

Came back and tried an upload. 1.67 gb of data with the card and reader took slightly over 4 minutes (about the same length of time when I tried to download direct from Camera to PC).

So if I tried a full 4 gb it should be about 8 minutes. That is less than half the 20 minutes I used to wait for a full 4GB card on the 16bit PC Card reader.

So, I am generally happy with the performance. Its visibly better.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Cheers

Glad u managed to get it at a reasonable price...:)

Data transfer rate is only about 6-7 MB/s? Quite a bit slower than the 30MB/s rated speed...:)

I did not realise this till you worked it out. Yes, it seems like its only 6-7mb/s. But at 30mb/s it would take less than a minute. I would have loved that performance but it did not happen. So what went wrong?

BTW - the two appears to be the real thing and not fake. All holograms and software CDs, papers intact in new unopened box. My system is clearly USB 2.0 compliant.

Any idea how I can do this?

You are using a Lenovo T60, right? One way to update the drivers is to use the Lenovo Support programs, they are installed by default (as delivered from factory / authorized dealers). There should a program group "ThinkVanatage" with a start icon "System Update". Start the system update and follow the screens. If you haven't done that before you might need to update the System Update software first (system will guide you). Finally you'll get a list of updates available. Load everything classified as "Critical" (tick the boxes) and let it run. Restarts will be needed.
In case you don't have the Lenovo System Update tools installed you can get it here: http://www.pc.ibm.com/europe/think/en/systemupdate.html?europe&cc=europe
Feel free to PM me if you need more help.

Thansk very much for this. :)
Indeed, my T61 did not have the System Udate button. So I managed to download the software through the link and it was installed perfectly. However after running it, it showed up that there is nothing needed for updating. So I presume its not a driver issue.

I have made mental note that my next laptop must have an expresscard slot for me to use such a card as they appear a lot faster.

Cheers

15-20 mins sure sounds damn long. I am currently using a decent Sony 17-in-1 USB2.0 Card Reader along with MacBook Pro and it takes no more (safely) than 7 minutes for 4GB transfer.

Hi Rendition, have you tried directly connecting your Cam to the MacBook Pro? I use a 350D and a Macbook Aluminium and it's taking me ages to upload photos. I took more than an hour to upload 3GB of photos. Do you encounter this problem with direct connection?

It uploads very quickly on a PC so I'm not sure where the problem is. Would iPhoto be faster?

Thanks, :)

From the galbraith site, it seems obvious that all USB 2.0 speed devices are actually rebranded USB 1.1 devices. Be sure to use usb2.0 high speed branded cables, and same with the hub or any other devices. Avoid all combo devices that use usb & firewire devices.

Sometimes the manufacturers like to dick everyone.
