tokyo + hokkaido, where to book?

If you want tokyo bcoz of disneyland only, easiest way is book hokkaido package tour, and extend on your own. Then in tokyo, just approach any of the local agencies to book their local disneyland tour. If you're sooooo worried abt walking and asking around in tokyo, then can try booking these "local tours" from JTB in Taka.

If you can read chinese, you should have no problem finding your way around. Most signs on the street and in train stations have chinese signs. Most train station has got information booth with English speaking person that can direct you too. Seriously, its really more fun planning your own trip and taking your own time to look around. Visit Otaru, its very romantic. Tour guide will let you hang for like 2hours....I stayed there for 3 days.

I speak zero Japanese and survived 14 days of Hokkaido + Tokyo + Osaka.

actually the older generation can speak japanese

I don't find food to be expensive in Tokyo, it's all a matter of knowing where to eat. Language is also not a problem, if you can read chinese, you will be fine. If you need to talk to the people there, most of them will understand you to a degree if you articulate properly i.e. slowly and clearly.

It's probably not so bad, if he avoids fast food places or eating beef.

The last time I was there, there were a lot of tourists who spoke only English and they looked as if they survived. Even a pair of Spanish women I met were doing just fine.

I really don't believe there are free and easy packages but I could be wrong.

Tokyo Green Hotel at Kanda-Awajicho was inexpensive and the room I had was almost western-sized. That hotel is near Akihabara, the electronics section of Tokyo, where you usually find a lot of bargain hunters. It's also walking distance to the Ikebukuro line, so you can get to Shinjuku station quickly and visit Yodobashi and Sakuraya camera. I believe that BIC Camera is in the same area, also.

I think it's Hotel Green Ochanamizu, I stayed there when I went to Tokyo earlier this year. As bosozoku said, it's a pretty decent hotel and yea, its smack near Kanda Station. When you land at Narita, get an express ticket to Tokyo station. From there to Hotel Green is only about 8 to 10 SGD.

Anyway, I managed to survive with the eye-witness guide to Japan and food there isn't exactly very expensive. You can go to many of the small eateries around. Normally near the entrance they have these vending machines with pictures of the food on them. All you need to do is to put your money in, press the button, collect the ticket and pass it to the chef. They'll whip it up and bring it to you!

Man... I love Japan!!

I had to book everything myself.. managed to get plane ticks from Creative Travels (at hong leong bulding) They're teh JAL agents here.

This one--ochanomizu = tea water.

I guess the vending machine is better for foreigners since the people at most restaurants mostly speak Japanese but there are a lot of great little restaurants all over Tokyo, especially if you don't eat in tourist areas.

You were brave. I couldn't imagine being there without understanding Japanese.
