The art of Studio Shoot

Hi everyone.
Happy New Year.

I would like to seek your advice on how to take shots that looks like studio shots from home.
The very last time i went to a studio, it was a very simple set-up and cost me a few hundreds. Of course, the quality is great.
I am trying to see if i can save that few hundreds and buy myself some nice flash light and umbrella to take nice shots of my 2 girls.
I just want more and feel that i can do the job given the right equipment.
Does anyone know the basic at least to have this done?
