hello all,

looking for a telephoto to add on to my d90, kit lens and 35 1.8. eyeing the 70-300 vr or the 55-200 vr. which one would u guys recommend? the price difference is quite big and i know the 55-200 kinda overlaps alot. but for those who use telephotos alot on dx, would the 55-200 still be considered a good buy to just use for solely telephoto on the d90? dont ask me to get 18-200 cause i dont really see the justification in paying so much to just get one lens haha >.<

get the 70-300 VR.

Yup, always buy something u will use for a long time.
Instead of buying something inferior, just to ease the spending urge !

get the 70-300....;)

haha damm everyone asking me to get 70-300 >.<

Well, if you need to get shoot with a telephoto now and on budget, then go for 55-200VR which still enable you to get decent good results.

As for 70-300VR, the cost is 1 to 1.5 times more than 55-200VR, i.e. $300~$400+ in compare with $800~$900+, which will require you to save more to get 70-300VR lens (the price given is just an estimation and as a guide only).

Is your current kit lens, a 18-105VR or 18-55VR?
1) If its 18-105VR, then save more & get 70-300VR.
2) If its 18-55VR, then get 55-200VR; otherwise you might face the focal gap of 55mm to 70mm, if you get 70-300VR for your telephoto range.

im currently using the 18-105 yup which has served me well. so thinking of getting a telephoto to complement

Then just get 70-300VR, which covers a good range from 18mm to 300mm.

If you can afford more, then I suggest to get 16-85VR to combine with 70-300VR...its so perfect range...though both lenses will cost u ard $2K or less...but worth it if you got that extra $$...

I agree with bro ETTK75. Actually I have the same dilemma as you last year. After careful consideration, I bought the 70-300 VR and had no regrets whatsoever since having it. If you are really in a tight budget and still wanna have a 70-300 lens, you may consider 3rd arty lens like Sigma 70-300 but you have to live with no VR and extending lens during focusing.

haha alright thanks guys :D:D:D may i also ask, for telephoto how do you usually shoot with it? cause havent tried one before but pretty interested in pursueing that genre of photography

I think the first place to visit is the zoo after getting the lens...get closed up shots of animals.

haha i see. exciting. alright will do so. using 70-300 to shoot street, will it be advisable?

Not to say it cant be done, but you will have more people noticing you due to the big lens. Furthermore it may have problems shooting in lowlight situations. A smaller faster lens might be better for street. 85mm 1.8? or if you prefer to be part of the scene and up close. a 35 1.8!

haha i see your point. alright will reconsider as well though having a telephoto for animals in nature will be a godsend
