Stop down

I take it "stop down" refers to the f/stops or rather the aperture (opening) of a lens but just exactly what is the meaning/consequence of 'stopping down' and how do you do it?

Stopping down means stopping down the aperture(reducing the size), where you simply reduce the aperture of the lens (thereby letting in less light).

Your camera will have this function if it's a prosumer or DSLR when you select Aperture-priority or Manual mode.

Stopping down can be used cos the surroundings are too bright or if you want to increase depth of field.
