If you are a photographer who still shoot with black & white films or store large amount of images in black & white negatives, but desire to create good digital black & white prints, this is the workshop for you. This session will cover techniques on scanning black & white negatives as well as processing the files digitally. Paul Kohl will be covering specific details which include converting colour to greyscale, understanding of image mode/bit depth, image processing for digital black & white prints, as well as Photoshop basics such as sizing, sharpening & spotting.

Improving on your existing printing knowledge, Paul Kohl explains the finer aspects such as colour management, Photoshop workspace, calibration, custom profile generation, editing and inspections that constitute to creating a good digital fine art prints. Actual demonstration & comparison will take place to discuss what key criteria is required to produce good digital prints & also tips on how to make careful colour judgement.

What are the types of fine art paper available in the market?
Do you know the nature of the papers and inkjet printer will either optimize or ruin the image quality?
Paul Kohl will showcase and describe different types of inkjet papers, and demonstrate how end images vary with different media types. He will also touch on RIP (Raster Image Processors) to control inkjet print, and share with participants what are the available choices in the market, and where are the sources for quality papers and printers.


Paul Kohl is a Visiting Professor at Nanyang Technological University where he is teaching photography, both digital and analogue. His work involves scanned negatives that are printed on a variety of archival papers using Epson printers. He graduated from the San Francisco Institute in Photography with a Bachelor’s Degree in 1973 and further pursued his Master Degree in Purdue University, Lafayette, Indiana in 1985. On top of that, he has also studied digital printing with Jon Cone at Cone Editions and John Paul Caponegro at the Maine Center for Photography.

Paul Kohl has exhibited his prints internationally and won several grants including a National Endowment for the Arts Photographer’s Fellowship, a Maryland State Art’s Council Grant and an Artist in Residence at Awagami Paper Factory in Japan. His work is part of the permanent collections of the Fogg Museum (Boston), San Francisco MoMA, University of Missouri-St. Louis, as well as numerous private collectors. Before coming to Singapore, he spent ten years in Japan where, besides his photography, he practiced Aikido, Jodo (Japanese Staff Fighting) and Tai Chi.
