MLMLWML hahaha actually I'm eyeing one of the AI-S 500 f4P or 600 f5.6 to use on my Nex 6 and D750. I really like the focus peaking on my Sony e+a-mounts so prob will keep my Tamron for now (unless a good offer comes along for it) :)

A real pity Nikon cant implement focus peaking yet.

Agree on the focus peaking part.. I was shooting some videos with the a7s with manual focusing on my nikon lens, its a joy !

Yes, the AFS 328 non-VR (both ver I and II) is a much sought after lens. When my friend sold it to me, there were like 3 to 4 people waiting and wanting to get it from him. He is sort of like my sifu in birding and he sold it to me. Even before I sold it, a couple of friends already told me they want it if I ever thought of selling it. In the end sold it to my friend whom I introed birding. Passing it on from generation to generation.

I birded 1.5 years with the 328 with TCs. It is actually good enough for 80% of birding needs. 604 is more than enough. Key is to mix and match with TC and APSC and FF cams.

Reach is one thing... distance to subject is always an issue too, because your lens must be good enough to resolve. The further out your subject the more you make it tougher. Which is why I think TC on zoom lenses usually does not yield very good results especially when your subject is small and far away.

So the other parts of birding comes in, not just gear. To know the birds well, their behaviors, to be able to get closer and yet not disturb them. When you can get closer, then you will be able to take much better pictures too (must blurrer/cleaner background). Birding is not just about reach and focal length.

I may raise some controversy here by saying this... this is what my sifu taught me. Want to shoot good bird photos, must use good tripod, must use good head. If you handhold or use a monopod even, you might get lucky with some shots, but when push comes to shove, in less than ideal conditions, your images will suffer from shake, micro vibrations etc...

Totally agree on your last paragraph.
but everybody's standard are different and I have friends who are happy shooting handheld as they find it more flexible and faster to manoeuvre around any directions to keep track with the birds.
handheld for long period of time can be more tiring than people who are using big lenses on support systems.

When birding 100mm can be very significant. More reach is always welcome.

And if comparing to the Sports version, the improvement in optical quality is astounding.

The Nikon mount for Sigma C version still no where to be seen after Canon is out for so long.

Have,Parasilk,TK and SLRR...seen it 3 weeks ago.
Did you ask?

Sigma Contemporary version ? I did called SLRR yesterday

Just bought this lens and tested it at Satay By The Bay. Didn't need any calibration with my D810 and I am pretty satisfied with the image quality. Considering it is a quarter the price of a Nikon 600mm lens, I can't complain about the sharpness I am getting. A few sample shots:

I got it for $2488 from Artworkfoto at Funan. All other shops seemed to be out of stock.

Outstanding ! Love the green background.

Finally got the Sigma 150-600mm Sport. Quite happy with the autofocusing speed and the sharpness even wide open @600mm. I am using it on Canon 5D3.

5D3A0689 by eaglekoh, on Flickr

However, I found it difficult to use it with the teleconverter. I have tired both Canon 1.4X III and Sigma 1401. Although it still can autofocus, the focusing is slow and difficult to lock even in good day light. Manual focusing is difficult with 840mm focal length and for fast moving subject like birds. So far I can never get a sharp focus. Anyone have any suggestion on how to improve the autofocusing with the teleconverter?

Hi, I am also using the 1401. If your images are oof, likely u need to do micro-adjustment which I did.

After adjustment, the focus quite accurate when it lock on but still find the AF slow.

End up I use MF (OVF) or LV which I find the latter is much better cos it seems to lock on and no need micro-adjustment.

These are shots using the 1401 with MF (OVF).

Hello, I just got the contemporary version, really like what I am seeing. Anyone know of a lens coat for the Contemporary version? I believe there is one for the Sports version, and the Contemporary one is on the way? I found this: http://www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk/sigma-neoprene-lens-covers but they do not ship directly to Singapore.
