For portrait, I'll recommend the 50mm f1.8. The bokeh is what you want in your portrait shots.
For flexibility portrait, meaning you take people and sometimes scenery (Especially during travel), I'll recommend the nikon 16-50 f.28

You kidding.. nikon 17 55mm f2.8 is hardly a newbie lens. Heavy pro lens but I'm sure you mean the Tokina 16-50mm F/2.8 or the Tamron 17-50 mm.

Why won't it be sharp if you have the correct holding techniques and use the proper shutter speed to freeze the picture? :think:
