Recommended Portrait lens for Newbies

I think you meant the Tokina 16-50 f2.8 (quite expensive for a newbie, and not so good), since there is no Nikkor 16-50... Tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 2.8 EX Macro HSM isbetter.
Same old question: How much $ u have?

<$700 = Voigtlander 58mm 1.4
<$1500 = Nikon 85mm 1.4
<$3000 = Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 VR

In any case, ur 50 1.8 is pretty good already. It IS the recommended portrait lens for newbies!

You kidding.. nikon 17 55mm f2.8 is hardly a newbie lens. Heavy pro lens but I'm sure you mean the Tokina 16-50mm F/2.8 or the Tamron 17-50 mm.
another upzz from me for this lens too. :thumbsup: value for $$ for a f/2.8 lens with good image quality. it is also sharp and contrasty. highly recommended for a newbie
that i hafta agree buddy! the weight itself is enuf to tell u that it is meant for "pro-er" shooter :bsmilie: and the price also another indication. however having said that, it sure beats the tamron/tokina/sigma in similar zoom range...

Ok from your lens choices you are talking about classical portraiture. You could use a wide angle as a portraite lens if you were trying for effects but based on classic stand point it would be difficult to get anything less than full body without distortions coming in.
Go for the 85/1.8 it' more than good enought, the 1.4 is normal a better lens when shooting at lower light levels. Let leave bolkah out of this. But rent first - look at market place there people renting.

Why won't it be sharp if you have the correct holding techniques and use the proper shutter speed to freeze the picture? :think:
