Hi guys,

I'm a little confused re sd card speeds.

I was at sim lim and they were selling Sandisk Ultra SDHC 8GB (class 4, 15mb/s) cards at around 40-50 bucks, and then there were also cheaper Verbatim class 6 8GB cards at a much cheaper price (20 bucks).

how is it that the class 6 cards which are supposedly faster are selling cheaper than the ultra which is rated class 4?

Is there something i'm missing out? which of these 2 cards are the faster one? using a 500D here.

I purchased the sandisk in the end because i've used sandisk and trust their cards.

there is peak speed and "standard" speed. Different brands also have their own way of testing the speed. As for pricing, not only paying for product but also for the brand name also.

For me i choose Kingston and Sandisk because very convenient if need to rma the memory cards.

If you are interested...try finding out your own camera`s read and write speed.

Then a friend pointed out that Sandisk Ultra cards are faster than some class 6 cards, even though they're class 4 cards. I found an old 1gb Sandisk Ultra card that I used with the K100ds and it turns out I can record until the card is full. Off to buy 8gb Ultra or Extreme card I guess

Speed Class 6 guarantees a minimum transfer speed of 6 MB/s.

Each SanDisk Ultra II card features a minimum write speed of 9 megabytes per second (MB/sec.) and a minimum read speed of 10MB/sec.

note that camera model does play a role for things as well.

Personally tested Kingston and Sandisk class 4 cards in my camera. Write speed for Sandisk is much faster than Kingston, can be a 50% difference. I'll gladly pay slightly more for a Sandisk. Got mine 4gb at $18, 8gb at $30+.

it depends on which Class 4 card series you are referring too as class speed is simply an indication of minimum speed imo. Best is to test both that are in the same price bracket.
