PENTAX K-01 & smc PENTAX-DA 40mmF2.8 XS - Official Embargo Date: 2/2/2012

look at my earlier post. I hope they take the opportunity to build more compact lenses. Ultimately its the image quality, handling and price that most will be concerned with. Though I'm not too keen on the design, I'm not a fashionista so I'll give it a try.

Plus supposedly from what I read, though its the same sensor, they're using a newer processing engine. I just hope they have more memory buffer.

guys,
this is definitely not for the pentax dslr owners, particularly k-5 owners.
the whole idea for pentax to come out with this little beast was trying to chip away market share from the other mirrorless cams
why get so hyped up???
- fans = fanatics???

I don't think any of the mirrorless cameras are for people who love DSLRs and MUST use a DSLR..

I think in the end, if Pentax made it small, then put in an adaptor to allow K-mount usage, end up zero sum game.

So in actuality, it would probably not appeal to non-Pentax users, come to think of it.. But it's a good alternative for the days that you don't want to bring the K5 out. Especially if you pair it with a pancake lens.

u are finding alot of excuses to buy 1... :bsmilie:

He doesn't need excuses. He IS buying one. Right ... Mr CWK? :P

Actually, if you look through all my previous posts, I always say a lot, then never buy it, then just suddenly buy. :bsmilie:

But one thing remains constant, I am usually not an early adaptor. :bsmilie:

I wouldn't call the design elegant but I think it is a beautiful machine. All the details are extremely well-resolved. Good design is as little design as possible.

Spoken from a product design student's perspective :bsmilie:.

but even, with the nonxs 40mm lens, the k-5 still not that "thicker" than the K-01, so rationally, not even a good alternative. just bring the k-5 with the pancake lens out, come shine or rain.

Pentax official spec says have Focus Peaking. So I guess I will see you around town with the K-01 :D
Yes, saw the official spec too.
I always try my best to support the camera brand I like ;)
(so long as Emjay don't try to 'kotok' me for my love of Pentax) :D

take away all the hypes - and talk sense...

- its form factor not smaller than k-5
- its capability/functionality not better than k-5
- its UGLINESS is instant
- without evf - half the fun gone
- live-view equal to shorter battery life

1. Smaller and more streamlined (w/o lens or with the 40XS)
2. Peaking for MF not better?
Prime M processor that can support the faster video rates already means its faster
Easier and faster with MF lenses - peaking; zoom window without the current shutter 'double drop' on the K5
WYSIWYG AF and MF.
Don't know what else (I hope no AA filter??)
So can't say its not better.
For the advantage of using MF lenses, I'd get one (I have too many old lenses of course)
3. Cheaper than the K5 for the same sensor (at least the same performance)
4. I had lots of fun using GF1 w/o viewfinder; so do lots of ppl w/o one on NEX and m4/3 so it can work, esp with nice small native lenses with
AF (not all positive w/o one of course)
5. ~so so~ with the design (not great, but I do like the black knobbed one)
6. Battery life remains to be seen. No big deal with my G3 with has an even smaller battery capacity.
Not really a big issue too since everyone carries spares (even for a DSLR) and 3rd party ones are cheap.
In fact I don't even need to buy new ones since I still using the ones from K7/K5.

Also don't forget that its a cheaper alternative for those stepping up from a K10, K20, K7, Kx, Kr.

So Fact; Not Fan ;)

Like I said, hopefully the new xs designated lenses has a recessed rear element - making it a more compact combo than the k5 or the other mirrorless cameras.

little beast? where?

this concludes two things:

its not actually a small design
K5 is probly as small as an aps-c dslr can get

I wager that they can probably do some cool engineering tricks to compress the right side which would make everything smaller - but it would be horribly un-ergonomic, and have poor battery life. :bsmilie:

Yeah ... you usually don't like to buy new products, but like to psycho people to buy them so that u can find out if there are any bugs, and then assess when they have been ironed out. :bsmilie:

in short - there's no break-thru, overwhelmingly compelling reason for a k-5 owner to get another camera like the k-01 with a form factor as big as the k-5. of course, no harm to get one if you can afford it, just to justify the behahvior of being an ardent fan.

That sounds very familiar hrm. :bsmilie:

I guess you guys have seen everything already. But I updated the first a few posts anyway.

Can't do much nowadays when I'm home w/ the kids :(

oh wow!!!!!! Thanks for info Fengwei. Finally I can consider retiring my NEX so that my grab-and-go set up (NEX) and Primary DSLR (K-x) can share the same lenses!
But wait....now the critical issue is the price. If we use the Pentax Q as an indicator, my guess it will sell for above $1k?

Actually, it look as big as the K5 though.. Just a little smaller like the size of a KX/R??

But the benefit of K-mount, and better Ergonomic with the bigger lens, I say it's seem a better option though..
And battery life, FW mention it uses K5 battery!! woot....... Hope it can last longer on LV though..

For now, is wait for actual review of the AF and low light focus. This is the most worrying factor for me rather the design or size. I just like the yellow grip design.. :P but still got this lust to ask FW, when can we pre order from Emjay :X

If it is as good, I can sell of the NEX and enjoy the full capability of a K-mount and AF with my existing lens.

you mean making it a "box-shaped" camera?:o
K5 has the battery perpendicular to its body while K-01 is parallel to its body. if they make it perpendicular to the body and forget about the grip.. that'd be interesting! :bsmilie:

btw the design seems more ricohish rather than pentaxish

Body-only (USD749) is cheaper than the Q kit 01 official release price (USD799).

Q was 999 when it first arrived in Singapore, so perhaps around 920-930??

Er... I already stated my case.

Breakthrough or compelling reason or not will differ from person to person.
I have over 20 MF lenses, many faster than f2. So to me its an attractive proposition to get one to use them better.

So pls don't paint every user as fan and spend money and no reason to get one.
