actually i don't quite get this ... how come Odex is suing the downloaders instead of the uploaders? as a distributor they should be suing other distributors, how would a mere consumer be able to know who is the legal distributor anyway?

yea you'd think that they'd follow the RIAA's lead on that...

how far do the limits of Odex's distributor rights stretch anyway? are they entitled to sue anyone who has downloaded any anime?

u know by their logic why haven't they sued animax too? Animax in a way would hurt their distribution of anime in the store.

Problem is for paid downloads, credit cards are usually the main mode of payment. However, more than 50% of the anime fanatics are minors and do not own credit card. Furthermore, most parents are not willing to allow their children to use their credit card for animes.

The solution to this minor problem is simple...

Case study - Maplestory

If you would kindly flip through the newspaper archives, I think it was one of the Digital Life article, I dunno how many millions maplestory made off my selling those A-cash cards...
The concept was simple - Buy the card with cash at a local bookstore or convience store and go online and enter the code. If kids can do this, then its THE best solution avaliable.

No credit card and no internet banking.

Even my lil sis bought over 30 of those cards... I thought she was like crazy or smth...

I think maybe they are the uploader so they can track who is downloading from them :bsmilie::bsmilie::bsmilie:

that's lame ... i mean this explanation.

time for some other company to come in and take over distribution
cut out the middle men

without media, packaging , transportation, warehousing, shipping, blah blah blah
i am sure that the cost per download will come down to budget version VCDs
and amount of sales will go up as well

that's a good alternative but not as secure as pay pal if the card gets stolen.

maybe they should unionize?

i'm sure there're quite a number of anime fan clubs in singapore considering the increasing number of cosplayers, if they form an association to liaise with the anime makers in japan directly that'll cut all the tapes inbetween :bsmilie: ok just dreaming

Using the same reasoning... credit cards would not be safe too since they can be stolen:)...

Of cos u buy the card and then go home and top it up into your account ASAP lah... do you know how A-cash works??

A quick summary for you then^^, hopefully i do not get my facts wrong

Its really simple actually.. its a system of converting real cash into virtual cash usuable for all internet transation within that website. First you have to register an account with the website, which has almost bank like security to prevent hacking and all those online threats.

Me the consumer goes to the local convience store to buy a top up card, say $10. This card has a fixed value. It comes with a pin number at the back covered by those silver security foil and a card number (Similar to a international calling card). Go home, login to your account, enter the card number and pin code and volia! $10 credited into your account for your use to buy stuff...

So this only works locally is it?

So far in practice...only locally... but theoratically, i don't see any problem with selling it regionally or internationally for that matter... except that there would be forgery and hacking and stuff... but i'm only suggesting for local use, as this is what we really need if we want to provide youths with a easy and proper platform for them to buy anime online via download.. assuming if odex is even smart enough to do it.

Then they could even encode in H.264 AAC... haha and not complain about packaging cost
