How to take pictures at night? My friend either appear to bright or often under exposed... What to look out far? Using minolta 505si with external flash that no TTL. I am new to photography... Stil learning... sigh...

If your flash does not have TTL metering compatible, then you may have to set the flash output manually. You can calculate it if you know the guide number using this equation: GN = f/number x Flash-to-subject distance (in feet or meters). Make sure you use a tripod and set your exposure for the background first. Ask your friend not to move and if possible, stand in the shadows of the streetlights.
