Newbie question- Aspherical Lens element and such things.

Hi I have a noob question. Most lenses advertise themselves as having some aspherical lens element. What in the world is that and does that make a great tech leap forward?

Since everybody out there claims they have an element like that in their lenses... uh.. does a non-asperical lens make any difference and are there actually lenses out there that dont have such an element.
