D40x is also an option if you want to get 2nd hand. It should cost around 550-600 with kit lens nowadays. It is almost identical with the D60. Too bad I already sold mine (mint) with less than 3k shutter count last month. Sold cheap too.
if budget is ur problem... then it's D60... but honestly, alot of cons u can find in D60... 3 AF point is one of it... night photography will gonna be a challenge.. if i got more budget, i would have choose D90 as i found D90 is alot better... u can compare it here, http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d90.htm

If buying new, the current model is D3000. To get better ISO performance, you can go for the D5000, since it shares a lot of internals with D90. Saves you some money too.
