I need some advise...
I have strong interest in photography and in the midst of my job hunt, i answered an advert 2 days ago on assistant photographer. they are a talent company but i am afraid to commit myself to a 28 months contract even though they claim to be expanding.
what got me skeptical is that the company seems to be sourcing out model-wannabes to take up a portfolio. I do not know if anyone who's interest would need to pay a fee to get a headstart for a portfolio.
Of course, on the other hand if some people are willing to dream in this way and get their money "cheated" it doesnt really concern the photographer. I am just concern about how true the words of the company as they claim to be expanding. I do not wish to put my whole head into a 28 months contract and later on having to source out shoppers along orchard road as a form of "assisting" the photographer.

Your concerns are well founded.
It might help if the terms of the contract are provided here - other than it being a 28month-term, there isn't any other information on your situation which others can consider and advise on.

this thread lasted for quite some time, lots of interesting conversations going on before.. im also finding opportunities to start out as a assistant, sent out quite a number of emails but still waiting for reply. any female assistant out there? i got rejected once because im a female and got asked to be a image consultant instead :sticktong

Hi Drumma, you mean for full-time assistant without experience? or freelance assistant without experience but with photog knowledge?
Some people aren't very interested in such things
and simply don't think in terms of building and team
participation in the photography industry.
When would be photographers want to do something
big in the future, they have to start throwing away all
their ego and get ready to be part of an outgoing
association and be part of a team.
Would be glad to hear all your views on this venture.
there is no such association FORMALLY but there are get togethers. i think some of the important people in the assistant circle are like king yee, zam, people like that.
i heard people like sebastian tan holds talks to listen to the input from assistants and some how set up a sorta foundation to pricing , job scope and all that sorta union like thing.
