Trying out food photography here. :) Please let me know what you think and any points for improvement are very much welcome! :)

For my inaugural post: Favourite loaf cakes from 2 Loaves (tried to emulate various food blogs and layouts in magazines I've come across):

imho the photos are a little messy/'busy' perhaps due to the different props used - sometimes less can be more.
you may want to consider including props / food items that are more complementary :) keep trying, you'll get better at it !

Hi!

I find composition for these shots are rather loose. Too many things in the shots for our eyes to look at. Correct usage of props because they are rather important for food photography. Red chop stick too striking, tissue pack show no purpose in the picture, newspaper on the table make the photo looks cheap, should have use a better looking plate instead of the blue plastic plate from the hawker and try not to use plastic props like fork or spoon (Look cheap.

Lighting - The lighting on the shot looks flat. Should have throw a more contrast lighting where there are some highlight, mid tones and shadow areas. The shot will have more texture on the food, making it looks more delicious. At this moment the plate of food looks dull. As a photographer we must learn how to make the subject looks interesting by playing with lighting.

Open for discussion.

I think you are shooting at a kopitiam using canon point and shoot so you are limited with your available resources. I'm also surprised your second photo is 1/30s and still sharp. Anyway, first photo the red chopstick is taking the attention away from the food so comparably, second one is better. And based on color scheme, the color of the tissue packet is not complementary with the colors in your food. So second photo without tissue packet looks good. Maybe rearrange the newspaper more artistically (its black and white so it can still complement. Your handphone contains same color as food so also complement). Your last food, I'm not sure if the plate is blue cast from flourescent or really blue... but it works well with the yellow carrot cake... not a fan of the plastic fork though.
