United debutants: How did they fare?

Four Reds made their Old Trafford debuts on Sunday against QPR. Here, we run the rule over their performances and impact on the game…

Angel Di Maria | Home debut | Minutes played: 83
It was a sparkling first outing at Old Trafford from the agile Argentinian. His skill, balance and attacking intent were a joy to watch as he inspired United's 4-0 victory over QPR. A goal and an assist (he was also involved in United's other two strikes) on your home debut is bound to attract headlines, but more than that it was his range of passing, vision, creativity and boundless energy in attack that constantly had fans out of their seats. Best of all, this is clearly no flash in the pan – there’s more to come. We’re in for a treat. His standing ovation was fully deserved and so was his Man of the Match award.

Daley Blind | United debut | Minutes played: 90
While Di Maria will rightly take the attention, the job done by debutant Daley Blind in the demolition of QPR cannot be underestimated. Starting his first match at Old Trafford in front of a back four completely new to him, the Dutchman, who went close to scoring late on, slotted into the United side with total ease; in the opening ten minutes he played more passes than anyone else on the field. Calm, intelligent and able to pick a pass, he already looks set to be a vital cog in this exciting, new-look United side.

Marcos Rojo | United debut | Minutes played: 90
It seems like an age since the Argentinian put pen to paper with United, but while the 24-year-old will have tougher tests than this, he looked comfortable in his new surroundings.

Rojo’s versatility was a USP that appealed to Louis van Gaal, and he slotted in at left-back for his debut as the manager opted for a back four. His guiding of the relatively inexperienced Tyler Blackett throughout was nice to see. A quietly effective first appearance.

Radamel Falcao | United debut | Minutes played: 23
Fans spent much of the match singing the terrace anthem borrowed from Atletico Madrid’s supporters as anticipation grew about seeing one of the world's most renowned finishers in action in a United shirt. When he finally entered the fray on 67 minutes, the score was already 4-0. The hotshot Colombian might have hoped to be involved when the pace and pressing was high, but he had one half-chance when Blind’s long-range effort was parried by Rob Green. He was sharp to it, but saw his shot saved. Still, El Tigre is clearly quick to pounce.

We can do much better, says Van Gaal after Man Utd's first win

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side have plenty to work on despite Sunday's 4-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers in the Barclays Premier League.
Angel di Maria scored on his home debut as United ended the wait for a first competitive win under the Dutchman in style, with Ander Herrera, Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata also finding the scoresheet.

Radamel Falcao, who completed a season-long loan move from Monaco on transfer deadline day, was introduced as a second-half substitute for his first appearance in a United shirt, while Van Gaal fielded two other new faces, Marcos Rojo and Daley Blind, from the start.
Although Van Gaal was impressed with the manner in which QPR were dispatched, he remains keen to see more from a United side who have been rebuilt following a seventh-place finish last season.
"When you have a result of 4-0 then you can be happy as a coach but you always have points you can improve," Van Gaal said. "I am very happy because of the result and the way we have played. We were very dominant and scored goals and kept a clean sheet.
"In ball possession we have lost the ball too much previously. We were more direct and that I like. Also, we have created a lot of chances, although we didn't score enough of them.
"We have always to analyse what we have done. The result is fantastic but we can get much better. This is a good start."
Van Gaal’s call for improvement included Di Maria, despite a home debut that won him the man-of-the-match award.
"When you prepare three goals and you make the first goal by yourself, then you cannot play bad but he had a lot of unnecessary losses [of possession] I think," Van Gaal said of the Argentina winger.
The victory lifted United into the top half of the table and, amid the renewed optimism at Old Trafford, Van Gaal said his aim was to return United to automatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League as well as developing the team's identity in his first season at the helm.
"Our purpose and our goal is to be in the first three because we have to qualify ourselves in the Champions League," Van Gaal said. "The most important thing is the trajectory; we are building a process and we have to play in a certain style."

Boss attended the game showing that he will stick to what he say on youth development!

Under-21s: United 4 Sunderland 0

Manchester United's Under-21s fielded a strong side against Sunderland at Old Trafford and were rewarded with a 4-0 triumph as Adnan Januzaj bagged a hat-trick.

Lous van Gaal, who attended the clash, perhaps treated the game as more of a traditional Reserves fixture in order to improve the fitness of some of his players. Luke Shaw and Januzaj may still be eligible for this level but their senior status showed as they were joined by Anderson and Will Keane in the starting line-up.

Januzaj took less than two minutes to register a shot into the side-netting following a slide-through pass by Anderson and Maksymilian Stryjek was kept busy by Saidy Janko's cross and a deflected Anderson shot. The powerful Janko smashed a drive off target as a goal seemed increasingly inevitable.

It was supplied in the 19th minute by Januzaj, who was presented with the ball by Stryjek's poor clearance. The Belgian fed Will Keane and, when it was returned to him inside the box, he arrowed home with his left foot.

Andreas Pereira doubled the lead three minutes later when Josh Harrop passed to the overlapping Shaw and his cross from the left was met with instant control and a smart finish from the Brazil Under-20 international. The Black Cats were in danger of being completely over-run as Will Keane displayed clever hold-up work when found by Shaw and Januzaj profited, illustrating his balance and composure with an assured finish for his second of the night.

Ben Amos had to be alert when Rees Greenwood threatened seconds later but United remained in control with Januzaj twice close to a hat-trick after being picked out splendidly by the rampaging Janko and when lashing into the side-netting following some spellbinding skills.

Amos kept out Carl Lawson's attempt and there was a change at the interval with Ben Pearson replacing Shaw. Although Januzaj and Will Keane had efforts, the sting went out of the Reds' play and Amos was again kept on his toes by Duncan Whatmore.

Anderson was inches away from a fourth when his strike beat Stryjek all ends up but came back off an upright but, to their credit, Sunderland battled on gamely and Liam Agnew was unlucky when firing wide. However, Januzaj had already stung Stryjek's palms when he managed to complete his treble by prodding in from close range after Marnick Vermijl raided deep into Black Cats territory.

United: Amos; Janko, McNair, Vermijl, Shaw (Pearson 46); Thorpe, Anderson (Rothwell 72), A.Pereira, Harrop; Januzaj (Weir 83), W.Keane. Subs not used O'Hara, Grimshaw.

Win like the Seniors

Ya man, others are enjoying playing in Europe, while we idle, even lost the opportunity to go for the Mickey Mouse Cup so early in the season.

There's a reason why you (and so many others) dubbed it the Mickey Mouse Cup...and I doubt it has to do with how prestigious it is. My point is I think United need to get their act together in the league first, before even thinking about the League Cup, much less the Champions League. I rather see United focus their efforts on winning the league (or getting as close to that goal as possible) instead of fighting for two other domestic cups and conceivably walking away with nothing and possibly missing out on the Champions League spots in the process. Basically, for once, I don't mind so much that United got knocked out of the league cup early on (cos there's usually a veteran or two who could start and face fatigue as well as the risk of injury as the competition gathers momentum.) Once United sort themselves out this season, I will join you in hoping for victories on all fronts as well....but for now, all I can think about is the league.
