Generally if the price of the lens is $$$$$$ then you should rent for a day or 2 to try out and see whether it really suits to you.
Agree with this. This can help with lens decision better.
Hands on experience is important.
However, not all lens are available for rent. Should have no worries for nikon and canon, but 3rd party lens are much harder to find. My search to rent a sigma 70-200mm F/2.8 has been fruitless...
