Went on a quicky at the zoo over lunch and was greeted by this fellow, I have never seen it before and it disappeared before I could have more shots. Its tiny and agile and definately a part of the monkey species. Anyone knows what it is and was it a recent introduction? I think its beautiful, equatable to the birds of paradise for the bird species.

For regular zoo-goers, you may remember the old Small Mammals exhibit, with squirrels, prairie dogs, slow loris, etc.. Well, its been upgraded (now called "Critters Longhouse")and features several new displays, most notably the rare Tamarins. Tamarins and the related Marmosets are South American monkeys that are no bigger than squirrels and often mistaken for them. Look out for these creatures at the Zoo:

Critters Longhouse behind the komodo dragon exhibit displays 4 species: Red-handed Tamarin, Emperor Tamarin, Golden-headed Lion Tamarin and Goeldi's Monkey

You can also spot free-ranging Cotton-Top Tamarins right after the turnstiles opposite the gift shop, as well as opposite the howler monkey exhibit.

At Primate Kingdom, look out for the Golden Lion Tamarin, in front of the garden pavilion.

At the Fragile Forest Tram Station, there's a display of tiny Black-earred Marmosets.

Finally at the Snake House's walk-thru exhibit, you can find the Common Marmosets.

See if you can 'hunt' them all down!

i also wan to go! but the entrance so ex...

count me in. i have friends of the zoo card.
Hi hi ....

i think all those discount vouchers, free car park vouchers are all invalid now .... new management now more commercialised ....
concentration is now on profitability, and so they are concentrating a lot on F & B. Now when you go to the zoo, you are walking thru food courts! Maybe they should change the name to Singapore Zoo Restaurants Centre.

IMO i think it is a lousy move by the new management as I feel that the young workers there should concentrate more on taking care of the animals instead of acting as waitresses and waiters, and more effort should be made to improve the layout of the exhibits. It is most silly to see young men manning ice-cream/drinks stalls along the way ....

But on the other hand, this is Sg way of doing things .... the bottom line :dunno:

Agree with you on the profitability part.

But the young workers are hired as F&B staff, not zookeepers/animal handlers. The young workers are not qualified to handle animals, only the professionally-trained staff do.

F&B is the least questionable way for the zoo to derive profit. Better than having them use dangerous animals like tigers for photography or make guests pay to watch animals engage in fights and circus acts.

Maybe i wasnt clear enough .... i mean why do we see so many youngsters in the zoo as F&B staff, instead of training more in handling animals? This is supposed to be a zoo, and i suppose the official land usage is still a zoo, and suddenly the management become professional F&B operators or restaurant landlords?
Becoz handling food will directly increase the bottom line more?
Visited a few zoo in other parts of the world but only in Sg do we see so many food outlets! Do you think this is a good concept?
Do you think they will neglect the welfare of the animals in the long run when the management realise that there is a goldmine in the F&B business? When the zoo becomes so profitable, will we get another Peanut Institution?
To me, a zoo is a zoo, a place where we can learn to appreciate and learn about animals and their behaviour. Set up research centre, learning area, etc .... what has F&B got to do with zoo?.... ya ya .... i know, who is going to feed the animals ....

In other countries, zoos are either fully government funded or backed by a strong zoological society with deep coffers. Unfortunately, the SG govt doesn't believe in giving money to animals, so the new management has been forced to turn a profit in order to survive. The govt has drastically reduced funding to the SG Zoo, and will eventually let it become fully corporatized. That's the sad reality of the SG society.

The SG Zoo is moving towards the Disney model of biz. If you've seen Disney's Animal Kingdom 'Zoo' before, you'll know what i mean.

Btw, the SG Zoo is hiring a lot more animal keepers too, though not as much as F&B staff of course.
