LED Video Light

I purchased Litepanel Micro LED light about more than a year ago for my camcorder. It is light and very little heat even after hours of operation. It uses 4 AA batteries but after one hour of continuous operation, the light starts to dim. So keep some spare batteries during shoot.

Litepanels Micro Lite LED Light for rent

Since the dawn of filmmaking, Hollywood cinematographers have understood the importance of a good eyelight— one that literally gives life to the face. Now in the era of HD resolution, is even more important to fill in shadows on the face and bring the subject's eyes to life.

Litepanels' lightweight, yet powerful new camera light was created in response to the overwhelming popularity of the company's MiniPlus model, Litepanels' groundbreaking professional production softlight. The new Micro harnesses the company's extremely efficient LED technology in an ultra-lightweight, extremely compact package. Users of DV camcorders can now enjoy a similar quality of luminous, soft, directional lighting, with the same warmth and great color quality that has quickly made Litepanels an integral part of television, broadcast news and motion picture productions worldwide.

Highly Controllable
The Litepanels Micro features a conveniently located integrated on/off dimmer switch at the top of its housing for instant 100% to 0 dimming, with minimal color shift. Output is flicker-free and heat-free and remains consistent. For additional control, a flip-down filterholder allows for work with the included color/diffusion gels.

Not Power Hungry
Litepanels Micro produces 1.5 hours of continuous output from just 4 AA batteries (it's three times more efficient than a conventional tungsten camera light). What's more, it's virtually heat-free so it's easy to handle. And the system can be run off of either standard or rechargeable batteries. Power can optionally be supplied through a convenient 5-12V input jack located on the back of the unit.

Elegant Design
The compact, low-profile Litepanels Micro head is ideally suited for mounting on a mini DV camera. Measuring just 3.3" W x 3.3" H x 1.5" D (83.8mm x 83.8mm x 38.1mm), the head weighs less than 4 ounces (.11kg). With its black matte finish and sleek design, the fixture is an unobtrusive addition to any camera.

Mounting Options
The Litepanels Micro housing comes outfitted with an integrated hot shoe featuring an adjustable tilt mechanism. To allow for multiple mounting configurations, it may also be mounted on the optional base plate for off-camera usage, or on an extension arm.

Rented this $30 for almost 2 days from CameraRental..excellent stuff with gel and rechargeable battery packs.

LED lights have all the advantage:
1. Lightweight
2. AA Batts means you can replace them quickly or camera batts (depending on make)
3. Slightly longer batt life
4. Almost no heat
5. Can use AC adapter if used indoor.

However, it has some stuff to look out for:
1. Cost, almost 4 to 6 times more than tungsten depending on wattage
2. Rating, cheaper LED gives a color cast in the video (USA / JAPAN made are the best bet)
3. Buy them from reputable video cam / accessories dealers

Using the ProLite (USA) mini (6x AA) that 50% more powerful than the one mentioned above. Great even in daylight fill ins

Hi engr. Thanks for creating and posting the review. I tried watching it in HD at vimeo, but around 50sec the music stops and the video is just a freeze frame until the end. Not sure if it is a vimeo problem or something on my system.

Hi jaegersing. I have no problems watching it on the blog and vimeo. Sometimes Vimeo is pretty problematic...

Hi engr. I just tried it again from another PC. It's ok on the blog, and also on vimeo as long as I turn HD off. But when I switch HD on it goes freeze frame at 50 secs. Very strange. Anyway I've watched it all now, thanks again.

If you do any more lighting tests, it would be great if you could include some shots with live subjects, to see how much the lights make the people squint and look uncomfortable. Some of the brighter lights can be too glaring when you are close to the subjects.

thanks for the comparison video Engr!

i was contemplating to get the Litepanels Micro and been reading some reviews from other users online. Most lpmicro users actually give praises to the lp micro but i noticed from your vid the power from the lp micro seems very weak when compared to the sony lbp. You also mentioned that the lp micro pro is better but is it much brighter than the normal lp micro?

it will also help if you can provide price range in your comparison so that ppl know if more money = more light?

thanks alot!

My no brand LED light with my DIY 12V 2000mAH Lithium Polymer battery
This light c/w a dimmer and a small fan for long continous usage.
The on-camera mic will pick-up the fan noise. I never use the fan.
It can use any 12V battery.
The light alone cost about $200.

You also mentioned that the lp micro pro is better but is it much brighter than the normal lp micro?

I saw the Litepanels demo at the recent Broadcast Asia. It is brighter than the micro, but it seemed to me that the micro pro was not as bright as the other units in engr's demo. I think they also recommended micro pro as a fill light, mainly to get a highlight in the subjects eye, rather than the only light for the scene.

U r right jaegersing. The primary use of the Litepanels are for fill purpose. Meaning there are already existing lights and you wish to fill the ugly eye bags for example. So I wouldnt expect the throw of the Micro Pro to be that powerful. The Mini Plus is a strong one but I think that is priced at SGD2000 o something. I could get a mini camcorder alr!

As someone mentioned, it would be interesting to have a live subject to check if it is uncomfortable. To be frank, all the lights would be uncomfortable. Thaz why I do not use lights as far as I can. If you really need one, indirect fill would be good but I dun think anyone of us can afford a lightman during an event shoot!

Anyone has tried LED Video Light on camcorder? How is it like? Thanks.
official ones are too expensive...rather make a trip to SLT and spend several days making one for a fraction of the price with rechargeable external battery pack included.
